"Penguin Eggs Review"

Musical friends and stalwarts in the Canadian folk music scene, Rick Scott and David Essig, in their folk elder statesman phase, found themselves living 500 metres apart as neighbours on Protection Island, just offshore from the harbour of Nanaimo in the Strait of Georgia.

Not having the excuse of distance anymore, it seems only natural that after settling into their new community they settled into a natural musical partnership.

Both were born American and made their lives in Canada by choice, so they share a common history and it shows in the material.

On Double Vision, the two old pros play together on sic of each other's songs as if they had been partners for years. They write about moms, dads, careers, friends and lovers-especially the ones that have gone.

Both David and Rick have had success and both have felt loss. Particularly poignant to me were David's song in memory of his friend Willie P Bennett and Rick's song called My Friend Has Gone.

David and Rick are sometimes joined by Shelley Brown on acoustic bass and Tirsh Clair-Peck on violin and viola, but htis is their record with sparse, timeless arrangments.

Double Vision is a simple, comfortable, lovely and wistful recording. Canada can consider itself lucky: they both made the decision to call it home so many years ago.

"The Province CD Review"

There is something about the proper pairing of expert musicians that can't be beat. Such is the case of this duo CD from these two lontime leading Canuck folkies. Resonating with elements of blues, R&B, bluesgrass and more, the tunes never seemed forced or tushed, but rather rendered with love and lots of soace to breathe. The harmonies are booming, the interplay between dulcimer, guitar and fiddle are crisp and fiery, and the honesty of such tributes as Willie P or the greasy Louisiana mind are addictive. A-.

"Rogue Folk CD Review"

We are delighted to present two great Canadian songwriters whose different musical paths have led them to sharing an island off BC west coast. Treading the path between their houses they revisited songs old and new that each had written but never before recorded. They found some bery fertile ground between Rick's R&B roots, David Essig's blues roots, and the lyrical story songs for which both have become revered over the past three decades. The result is a fine CD, Double Vision, which features a dozen songs of life, love and loss seasoned with literate wit, the grace of grief and considerable kindness.

"Essig and Scott Share Double Vision"

Bluesman David Essig and roots/folk master Rick Scott blurred the lines of their unique songwriting styles into their CD Double Vision being issued Friday.

Essig is a globally respected bluesman who tours widely in North American and Europe.

Expressive Scott is one third of the iconic roots/folk band Pied Pumkin when he's not busy with his solo work and kids' shows.

They share dry wit and keen observation skills creating tunes spanning personal pickles and political prickles.

"Renowned local folk duo have' Double Vision'"

Two kindred spirits, growing up in the same era, sharing similar politics and appreciation of roots music, have produced a remarkable new CD called 'Double Vision.'

Acclaimed Protection Island musicians Rick Scott and David Essig have been fixtures of the Canadian folk music circuit since the folk scene in Canada exploded in the early 70s.

Essig earned praise when he burst onto the scene during the 1971 Mariposa Festival as a solo artist. Considered one of the best blues guitarists in the world, Essig's steel guitar work on 'The Promise", the opening song of Double Vision, is a poignant example of a master musician at the height of his craft.

Scott, an acknowledged Appalachian mountain dulcimer master, spend his formative years in Texas not far from the Louisiana border.

All songs on Double Vision were written by Scott and Essig. The disc was recorded at Essig's Watershed Studio on Protection Island. - Canada.com

"E-Today Review"

Guitarist David Essig and dulcimer guy Rick Scott have known one another for best part of 35 years. They've shared many a stage, too, but until now never put out a CD. This, Scott's first new recording for adults in over a decade, is an absolute joy of real honest, pure and perfect country folk blues pickin' and harmonizin'.
