Green Pond’s David Givens’ new EP releases March 20

Green Pond has a hopeful rising star.
David Givens, a singer-songwriter hailing from Green Pond, will debut his EP on March 20.
An EP is an extended play record, and a musical recording that contains more tracks than a single, but is usually unqualified as an album or LP.
As a pastor’s son, Givens began his music career at the age of two, singing in choirs, praise teams and working audiovisuals for church. Then at 14, he began writing songs.
His career really began to take off in 2015. “I recorded 20 songs in 10 hours and ended up throwing it all away. The quality was poor,” said Givens. “It just wasn’t the right time.”
At present, Givens has a single available called “Addiction,” which has tunes inspired by his Trinidad Tobago ancestry roots. He mixes pop, rhythm and blues, and electronic dance music.
The song’s lyrics relate to trying to move on after heartache from a breakup or loss of a loved one. The story line involves a young man attempting to overcome the rejection of a lover and the addictive memories following the separation.
The song is based on Givens’ own life, as he had difficulties conquering the overwhelming memories associated with the death of his sister.
“Before I begin working on my music, I take time to pray, meditate and clear my mind so that I can be at my best. I try to expel any negativity,” said Givens.
Originally, Legion — and later Mahoganee and Andre Amiger of Responsible Artistry Inc. in Beaufort — produced Given’s album “Electric Kingdom.” Part one is called “Innocence and Fallen,” the first of a series of what Givens calls episodes or stories. An exclusive song will come out with his new EP which will also feature a remix of one of his older songs with a major artist singing along with Givens.
Inspired by Prince’s creativity, Dawn Richard’s shape-shifting, Celine Dion’s vocals, Shirley Caesar’s gospel sound and Janet Jackson’s pop and hip-hop, Givens developed his own style by mixing all the genres together to form his own.
He has plans for a podcast called “The Earth According to David” where he hopes to feature a section called Indie Power, allowing singers and songwriters to perform for viewers who vote on their favorite acts. “I want to support fellow artists,” said Givens. “Artists need to work together and help each other out. The music scene is scarce except in Charleston, and black artists are divided. I want to change that and give artists a platform,” he said.
Givens has come a long way from small town Green Pond. But he has never forgotten his roots and memories associated with the Lowcountry. His music is a blend of old and new with traces of every genre of music that has impacted his life.

Bio
Vocalist and songwriter David Givens is a natural creative force and a boundary-pushing Pop/R&B/EDM artist. Gifted with a unique and versatile talent, David makes fun, engaging original music unlike anyone else on the scene. He began singing and writing as a child and began his life as a pro in 2015. He deftly blends the Southern Gospel influence he gained growing up in Green Pond, South Carolina with his Trinidadian roots and 21st Century pop skills into music that is his and his alone.
His most recent single is “Addiction,” which belongs to his four-part David World album series and is set to drop in October of 2019. Previous singles include “Crush,” “Pulse,” and “Welcome To The Show,” which are also included on David World. He has also won the Coast 2 Coast Live Columbia competition and been nominated for Best Indie Artist at the 2019 Bryant Paul Hughes Awards.
David is an intriguing and compelling performer with a positive energy inspired by legends like Prince, Chris Brown, Janet Jackson, Robyn, Peter Gabriel, and James Ingram as well as anime, video games, literature, and pop culture. He’s truly a man of the modern moment whose main goal is creating fresh experiences for his audiences and motivating others like himself who dare to dream out loud. “I want to inspire those of every nationality, ethnicity, body size, spirituality, sexual orientation, and ability,” he says, “I want to tell stories through music that are not only fun but insightful and honest.”
Like all great artists, David is unpredictable and driven to express himself in ever-shifting and honest ways. “What makes me cool is just being my weird, nerdy, smart, and black self,” he explains, continuing, “I don’t like hiding behind masks and lies.
