"Listen To The Music Band"

For parents of a certain age, David Grover's latest album will have a familiar ring to it. The vast majority of the songs are Grover's original compositions, but on every track, Grover and his bandmates perfectly nail the sound and feel of late-'60s campfire folk. And they do so without any kind of semi-ironic retro sense; this is pure, earnest old-school folk music. And it works just as well for kids now as it did then.—Ages 2 and up

"Listen to the Music Band"

Listen to the Music Band. CD. 56:12 min. Prod. by Big Bear Music and Koch Records. Dist. by Koch Entertainment. 2007. $15.
K-Gr 3—David Grover & the Big Bear Band are back with their latest studio album, a pure celebration of music. Virtually every one of the 13 songs extols the wonders of music, with many of them encouraging everyone to participate. The beautiful blending of the vocals of David Grover, Terry A La Berry, and Kathy Jo Grover provide perfect balance with an exciting variety of instruments played to create folk sounds, a touch of country, and an occasional bit of jazz. While many of the songs are written by Grover, this collection also includes the Carl Perkins tune, "Daddy Sang Bass"; the Randy Newman song, "Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear"; and the Barry Manilow tune, "One Voice." One of the standout songs, whose subject has nothing to do with music, but everything to do with courage and perseverance, is the jazzy "The Ballad of Muhammad Ali." This collection will be popular with parents, librarians, and teachers.—Veronica Schwartz, Des Plaines Public Library, IL

Bio

David Grover, former lead guitarist for Arlo Guthrie, uses his songs to teach children about the important things in life; holidays with family, planet preservation and respecting each other. A legend in the Berkshires of Massachusetts he and his Gang have performed at the White House, opened the Goodwill Games, appeared on The Today Show and performed with the Detroit Symphony in their Youth Series. Performing for the last 40+ years David has become a multi-generational tradition, time honored for his plaintive folky vocals and immaculate acoustic guitar work. Talent and universal truths were born together in performers like David and everyone can see it, from the museum coordinators to a 5th grader's hand written testament to his coolness, a feat by anyone's standards. Other credits include his PBS special "Chanukah at Grover's Corner" and the countless boys, girls and grownups who count themselves as Grover Groupies.
