"Guy Takes Listeners Along For Journey"

A review of David Guy's "Undertow." A CD release show will take place tonight at The Loft

Date published: 12/14/2006

Local musician David Guy has been a disciple of rock music since his teen years in the '80s, but the time had never been right to release his own music until now.

His album, "Undertow," is a multi-dimensional collection of music that showcases a remarkable depth of spirit.

One thing that stands out about the album is the sequencing, and don't mistake that for faint praise. Guy has ordered the songs in such a way as to bring his listeners along as he vacillates among emotions that range from bitter, angry to optimistic and introspective.

"Nickel For Your Soul" and "Me and Myself" begin the album with a bang, as they establish a strong rock energy before the touching "You Bring the Sun."

Guy sings about escape on "Unconditional Land," which stands out because of its rolling melody and unexpected tempo changes.

The next few songs take a more morose turn and borrow heavily from mid-'90s grunge music. The title track, which is the album's hinge, begins the same way but ends on a more defiant note.

"A Simple Song" and "Knee Deep in the Purple Sea" are upbeat and a lot of fun, with the latter driven by a laid-back groove that makes it easy to forget one's troubles.

"The Things I Never Will" and the caustic "Cut" follow before the album ends with "Embraced," a warm guitar instrumental that's like a hearty sigh after a big accomplishment when the hard part is over and you have time to rest and reflect.

The journey that Guy takes is complicated, it's honest, it's cathartic and it's ultimately satisfying.

Bio

The record "Undertow" started out as David's attempt to put into words, music - something, anything - to express some of the real-life issues he faced in his youth and as an adult. As an introverted child and product of an absent father and doting mother- there were lots of things boiling up to a breaking point in David's life. He turned to music as an adult, at nearly age 25, and started to appreciate the outlet it provided. Playing guitar for hours became an obsession and, over time, he found a friend in the six strings he fiddled with endlessly. His knack for songwriting began to develop shortly thereafter and lyrics began to flow out which expressed his hidden feelings in a way he never realized before. His music is greatly influenced by the passion of such artists as Jeff Buckley, Neil Young, Pink Floyd and REM. All the years of keeping things inside were finally behind him and he concentrated on honing his songwriting skills to be able to put the pain, loss, anger and, in many cases, happiness and love into song. Music as a catharsis was what drove David to decide to record and produce his debut record- "Undertow". The title is fitting in that the songs reflect the issues and feelings that are hidden inside but run deep in many of us. David has always been drawn to water in his own life and the idea of music as a cleansing also applies. This debut record represents a lifetime of feelings put into a very short capsule but powerful and expressive nonetheless.

Dave began collaborating with Lisa Lim in early '07 as the duo "Flaming Red Horizon". Lisa is an accomplished singer-songwriter in her own right but is well known for her phenomenal guitar playing skills. She is also adept at keyboards, bass and drums bringing a multi-faceted talent to the duo. Joining the group are musical talents Tim Gregson on bass guitar and Bob Osborn on drums. Flaming Red Horizon aims to put on a high energy, fun performance every time.
