Bio

David James:

Born into the house of a musician, David James was raised on the folk music of the 1960’s and 1970’s. His father, the front man of the popular South Jersey band Sweet Life, had him playing the piano at age 4. He later learned the saxophone and guitar. DJ, as his friends know him, has been singing ever since.

As the president of two singing groups in high school, he was awarded the Dorah Kyatt Award for Vocal Performance for Southeastern Pennsylvania. He then attended the University of Virginia, where he performed in the all male a capella group called the Hullabahoos. His performance of Train’s Meet Virgina, was nominated for The Best of College A Cappella Album. After a year in Charlottesville, he moved home to Philadelphia to attend the University of Pennsylvania. There, he sang with the nationally famous Off The Beat. His recording of Hoobastank’s Crawling In The Dark, was the first track on The Best Of College A Cappella CD (2000), and was in the running for Song of the Year. In David’s final year in Off The Beat, the group’s album, Burn Like A Roman Candle, won Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Arrangement.

Between his junior and senior years at Penn, David was cast in the National Tour of RENT the Musical. He performed in 85 cities over 10 months, and 230 shows. Returning to New York in 2003, He was cast in the National Tour of the Off Broadway smash hit Altar Boyz. His 2005 stint in Altar Boyz lasted 5 months before returning to Los Angeles and getting back to songwriting.

After playing bass guitar, briefly, with his friends Ethan and Evan, of the New York band, The Anthem, David James began writing and recording his own music. Since 2003, he has developed a catalogue of over 50 songs, and has recently completed his debut album, “Five Miles East.” After just a short time, David was signed to a management deal with Artist Alliance Entertainment, and garnered attention and praise from top label executives at Epic Records and Sony Publishing. After moving to Los Angeles in the end of 2005, David’s live performance has begun to capture the audiences of tinsel town, where he has performed at such venues as Genghis Cohen, Highland Grounds, Molly Malones, and most recently, BB Kings Jazz Club.

David James is a songwriter with a new sound and old roots. His folk influenced, pop songs carry an honesty that legitimizes them in today’s pop scene. In just the first year of his solo career, David has already developed an impressive catalogue of well written music. And with an original voice and aged performance style, this young artist is sure to carve out a place for himself in the music world.
