"Lynda Rivington"

"David's songs come straight from the heart and are about life's experiences, including love, relationships, and of course, baseball. His best-known song, "Two Out, Two On" is about watching your child play baseball.

Definitely an artist to keep your eye on." - OSCAR

Bio

I started writing and performing music when I was 15. I played and sang in a duet for a few years, then, after a few years in a dance band, set up as a singer-songwriter in Vancouver. I wasn’t happy with my writing ability, so, I studied composition at the University of BC and in London, writing for chamber groups, choirs and choreographers.

The “serious” music life was too serious – it brought me to a dead halt, and I stopped writing for years. When the urge hit me again I turned to songs, loved it immediately, and haven’t stopped, a hundred songs later. I also started performing again, in local Ottawa clubs like Rasputin's Folk Cafe, 3x at the Ottawa Folk Festival and regularly at Christmas Goose at the National Arts Centre.

In 2012 I once again became a full-time musician, writing and performing, thanks to the strong encouragement of a number of fine musicians I met at Songstudio 2012.

Through my life I've been on a lot of stages, and never met one I didn't like, but I didn't play for audiences much for a while, so it’s great to be gigging again. I am now playing house concerts and small clubs (the Free Times Cafe in Toronto, Luneta Bistro in Ottawa, V=BOlingbroke Cafe, Mooney's Bay, etc.).

Influences - well ...for songs, I admire Ferron, Stephen Fearing, Leonard Cohen, Annie Gallup, Dean McTaggart, Townes van Zandt and many more. people say I sound like Townes van Zandt - maybe Townes meets Ferron?

I love to play for people - I'm most relaxed when I'm on stage. I love the silence that comes over an audience when a song is really resonating with them, and I love the laughs from the back and forth, especially in house concerts, but with larger audiences as well.

What do I write about? Whatever the song fairy brings me, mostly. People say it's music for grown-ups, and I guess it certainly isn't commercial songs for pre-teens. But the young people I play for - and write with - get it just fine.

The music doesn’t always sound like “folk”. Sometimes more rock or country ... but my intention is nonetheless to write the truth as I see it. What moves me most is the courage of ordinary people, and the songs attached to this EPK reflect that. It seems to move audiences too, which is why I’m doing this.
