David Lawrie is a 23 year old [sic] UK Composer and Producer who was responsible for the great debut album The Triumphant by Vaughan King.

This second beautifully packaged album is an exquisitely realised set of eight songs. Beyond categorisation, Lawrie employs wildly imaginative soundscapes to envelope his haunting and complex songs.

This is perhaps one of the most original and inventive albums we have received this year. Each playing reveal new layers. Transfixing. - Electric Ghost

“David Lawrie is an English composer and producer who has studied under internationally acclaimed pianist and conductor blah blah blah…”

Normally a bio like that would elicit one very long yawn from me, followed by a jaded sneer and my usual mini-rant about over-educated privileged kids who… etc etc… But it’s clear that David has used all that knowledge and study well, creating some wildly divergent music that never fails to pique interest and entertain.

On his solo release Liars, Charlatans, Jinxmongers Dave mixes electronic and live instrumentation, expertly using the studio as another instrument in his musical voyage. Lawrie almost seems like a mad alchemist, blending together vocal loops, electronicky noise bursts and acoustic instruments to create a sort of hybrid indie-pop. In fact he reminds me of a slightly more cerebral and navel-contemplating Gotye.

His musical adventures include production credits for a number of artists as well as co-writing and producing Parasol, an album of spoken word and music, with author David Lines. It’ll be interesting to see where his musical journey will take him next! - DRUNKENWEREWOLF

Pulling us out of the séance, the earthy folktronica tones of David Lawrie send us to an entirely different plain. As the appellate tagline suggests, “Composing in old York and New York”, Lawrie uses the traditional elements of classical with a mix of, soothing, electronica to craft heartwarming paeans like this adroit and beatific number, ‘Over, Under’; taken from his most recent LP, Dorothea’s Boat.

The trembled vocal and mandolin chamber-dub original treads a fine spirited line between eulogy and romantic declaration; Lawrie layering sophisticated triggers and loops together for a sublime woodland score.

Two additional versions subtly strip away the textures and instrumentation from their scion. The First, Second, Third World Live variant features a charmingly odd didgeridoo beatbox accompaniment, whilst Lawrie’s fraught and tenderly pranged vocals are – apart from a choral synth – uninterrupted on the final interpretation.

Relatively obscured in the vast expanses of the Internets musical wilderness, David Lawrie remains a rare find and treat.

Bio

I am an English Composer and Producer and have worked both as a solo artist and with others.

I have worked with artists such as Lost from Atlas, Vaughan King, Coreline and The Laughing Gravy.

I have studied under internationally acclaimed pianist and conductor Dr. Randall Whittaker, and the award winning composer Dr. Dale Perkins, and have recently co-written and produced the soundtrack and score for Tortoise in a Nutshell's latest production The Last Miner which toured extensively throughout 2010 and 2011 after it's incredible success at the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

I produced Captain Wilberforce's album Ghost Written Confessions to great critical acclaim. Captain Wilberforce was invited to perform live on BBC Radio 2 in March 2012.

My solo work is influenced by hardcore minimal composers such as Steve Reich and Phillip Glass as well as modern alternative/experimental artists like Björk and Aphex Twin. I also admire psychedelic and progressive music from the sixties and seventies. It's quite a mixed bag!

Current projects include:

Co-writing and producing "Parasol" (an album of spoken word and music) with The Modfather author David Lines.

I've just finished producing my long running partners and great friends, Lost from Atlas' new EP, which is ready for release this autumn.

My NEW album Dorothea's Boat is complete and waiting for a release schedule.
