"Fat-Boys Show"

Friday June 17th, 18th, 2005

As I pulled up in the parking lot of Fat Boys nightclub, I had an inner feeling that I was about to experience something not of this world. And so it was. Dave McCoy and his band are auditory artists of a unique nature. Sounds are vibrations and vibrations are what the Universe uses as it's essential means of comunication. Everything that exists, physicaly or otherwise, vibrates at some level. Music is one of my favorite. It is said that in ancient times after the blue skies of day would recede and reveal the crystal clarity of the heavens, that the motion of distant planets and galaxies within their respective orbits would produce music of a Divine nature. Well, I was fortunate enough to hear it again the other night in a small club in Tyler, Texas. When I sat down at the small round table and used my eyes to check out my surroundings, my ears were filled to the brim with vibrations that provoked serious emotional responses in my head. With songs like "Spainish fly" and "Galactic Vacation" David fires his Stratocaster like a rifle and demands you stop whatever you are doing and listen...I mean really listen. An ecclectic mixture of straight up Rock 'Roll, modern jazz, classical, and stuff that hasn't been invented yet, until now. I really am at a loss for any way to put their music in any conventional category. The back bone rythm is provided by the father-son combo of Bob Glenn (drums) and Billy-Bob Vickers (bass, and the younger of the two) Rarely do find this kind of tightness and freedom in the rythm section. I found myself trying to play air-drums, but even that made me tired after a few measures. The energy and sonic booms that were coming out of wood and animal skin was absolutely heart stopping. Bob was just a blur of arms and legs as he banged away like a man possessed. While his dreadlocked musical offspring laid down a bass line that was pure granite-rock solid. The whole product makes you limit your conversations with whoever you came with to statements like "Wow", and "Holy S$#@!!" I was shocked to hear such sounds. I didn't know how to react at first, but soon found that shutting my pie hole and just listening worked the best. Coming from California, I did not have very high expectations for a town like Tyler. I guess that's part of the Cali attitiude, but here I was, sitting in a bar in a dry county and trying to pick my lower jaw off the ground. McCoy has to be one of the most insane solo players I have ever heard in my life. It seemed as if he were some sort of ancient wizard of days long gone, barely touching the strings as my mind bended in any direction he pleased. I lost track of time and space, which slowly became more meaningless to me. And it's not like I haven't been around. I've seen a lot of differen't bands all over the country, but none had captured my attention so quickly, and have yet to let go.The second set was almost dream-like, and I was in the Omniscient perpective, looking at the whole scene unfoldinng, with me in it.I am starting to feel that way now, just writing about it. I have more to say abot these guys and the two shows I saw this past weekend, but I'd rather go listen to their CD right now. Look for more detailed accounts of my experience in the near future. But I highly recomend you come back to this site for more info on one of the hottest new Improv-rock bands in the country. Rock'n roll needs these guys, and so do we.
