It's late at night and I'm looking at this instrument I've been playing for more than 45 years.... best friend, transporter, seducer, a mover and a shaker ... Winnipeg was where this banjoist started... early 60's folk solo and as part of that famous and forgotten trio The Winnipeg Ramblers.... 5 great years of arranging beautiful 3 part harmonies, early TV, concerts, coffee houses and all that great stuff ..... the boys stayed in school, I left town, Dylan went electric, hello Beatles, adios to that folk scene. Tried Toronto and hitcked to Vancouver.... early 70's brought first commission to compose music and perform for theatre, Passe Murailles 1837 "The Farmers Revolt" road company in southern Ontario..... by 1978 did "1792 Etc." as part of the Vancouver Heritage Festival/Habitat... new play, new music and two weeks performing at City Stage... Greenthumb re did the play and bought the music.... you can see the pattern... banjo, perfect for historical drama!! Jump to 1987... preview for "Anarchy"/Toronto.... new play, new music on the Omnichord.... as if one fringy instrument wasn't enough!! 1988... yikes... writing and singing songs for occassions for $200 a pop.... birthdays, weddings, celebrations... whatever.... the Coutts Hallmark of song... early 90's Childrens Festival, new play etc.. and now I'm free and doing what I love to do.... on the road and ready to move you... banjo like you've never heard it before.... sweet and mild, sometimes wild... blues, classical, R&R, reggae, latin, country, folk and funk and more.... music, stories and lots of laughs coming to a stage near you....... looking forward to seeing you soon, dPs
