"Straight to the point : David Shaw"

With his 'Infected' EP coming out next Monday, David Shaw and the Beat is giving away a free download of title track remixed by Vicarious Bliss.

Vicarious Bliss (Andy Gardiner), an electro artist signed to Ed Banger Records is known primarily for his 'Theme from Vicarious Bliss' and several remixes. He collaborated with Ladytron on her 'Velocifero' and produced I Love UFO's debut album.

Born and raised in Manchester, David Shaw is today based in France. His cultural duality has had a profound influence on his music, and allowed him to create an original identity somewhere between techno and indie, he, who never wanted to choose between guitars and machines. As producer, writer/composer and performer, he has distinguished himself on the independent scene through various projects such as his own: Siskid (Initial Cuts, Meant Records), Animal Machine (Meant Records) and collaborations: Blackstrobe with Arnaud Rebotini and Ivan Smagghe (Beggars Banquet).

Now he's back with a new single, 'Infected', the first extract of his album to be released on Her Majesty's Ship. This song is a cover of The The, released in 1986. David Shaw gives it a brand new interpretation, but without losing its catchy eighties pop mood. The remixes are delivered by two great acts in electronic music: JD Twitch from Optimo fame and offer a brilliant old school flavoured version. The other from Max Pask, half of Populette, offers a sweaty epic 12 - minute long version, ideal at sunrise after a long night of dancing.

In light of his EP launch we sat down with the man himself and got Straight to the Point

First record bought...

INXS “Kick”, when I was 10, well the cassette really, then my mom bought me the record as a present, as our tape player was on the blinker. I used to spend hours in front of her old Dynatron listening to that record, I even had some "Michael Hutchence dance moves" in front of the mirror, but then I realized I also loved Prince….

Last record I listened to was ...

Well I haven’t bought any new records recently, but the last one I was listening to when I left the house was, Jay Reatard “Blood Visions”! OH I do like Jef Barbara’s “Wild boys”, which was released recently.

The record I pretend I don't love is ...

Bros “When will I be famous?” (there i said it)

The record I always go back to…

Colin Newman’s A-Z but there’s really a holy trinity, which is: Colin newman “A-Z “/ Tones on tail “Pop” / Aphex Twin “Ambient work 85 92”

My biggest musical inspiration is...

Dunno’ if he’s my biggest influence, but for sure Colin Newman, would be (again) top of the list!

My first gigging experience was…

God it was terrible, must have been 15, just being another indie kid somewhere in Blackpool, my cousin Marc was also in the band, we played a cover of “kill your television”, and I had trouble keeping up even though I was rocking my heart out. That’s when I said to myself, I really want to do this again!

My worst gigging experience was…

Not really a gig but a dj set in Hong Kong, on Christmas eve, I had to stop my set, when a big fight started between Triad members (what I was told), they had big shiny knives and I was hiding in the booth scared shitless until the promoter rushed me out the back door.

My best gigging experience was…

Defo when I was a musician for Blackstrobe, I got to play some great venues and festivals with them Pukkelpop festival was incredible…then again Oxegen festival in Japan was magic too!

The person I would least like to share a stage with would be…

Well, a bit easy I know, but Coldplay, for example, is just the epitomy of what makes my skin crawl in the worst possible way of course, just looking at them….(ooh yuk!)

If I wasn’t a musician I would be a…

I use to love drawing so maybe drawing weird comics for a living would've been great!

Well it was my mom's favourite now i got them all on DVD, but every now and then I like to - Body Tonic

"David Shaw : guide to Paris"

Sometimes it takes an outsider to truly know a city.

Someone who wasn't born there, someone who came of age in a different environment. Hailing from Manchester, David Shaw came to Paris late in life but almost immediately fell in love with the city.

Soaking himself in the Parisian dance scene, David Shaw began to make waves last year. Working on a new album, the English producer released preview EP 'Infected' on Monday (March 5th).

A cover of The The's 1986 track, 'Infected' comes backed with remixes from JD Twitch - of Optimo fame - and Max Pask, half of Populette.

Tracking down the producer, ClashMusic asked David Shaw to give us a short guide to Paris. Here's what he had to say.

- - -

What is the first place someone should visit in Paris?
Oh that’s a tough one, as there are many beautiful places in Paris, one should see, but you can get a pretty good impression of the city, going through the Tuileries (if you come from Concorde) which leads you to the Louvre and its famous pyramid. It always leaves a strong impression.

What is the best restaurant?
This is a place which won’t be in tourist guides (one of my canteens) Le Petit Bleu, rue Muller in the 18th, the best couscous I’ve ever had so far… they’re not really friendly, but dead cheap, and meat is incredible.

Now for the best restaurant, my heart is torn between:
Le Belisaire, 2 rue Marmontel, just up the road from where I live, a bistrot, where the menus change everyday, typical french gastronomy at a high level. Philou, 12 Avenue Richerand, on the Canal St. Martin, is another bistrot, where the meat is also from another planet, wine list is excellent and the service is very good too!

What is the best bar?
Harry’s Bar, 5 rue Daunou at Opera, I went there a few times with my friend Rob (he’s a regular): it’s an American bar from the 1900’s (almost like a private Gentlemen’s club) you order your first cocktail, and then you (usually) let the waiters prepare the following drinks, in order to discover new ones! The cocktails are truly incredible, but very dangerous!

Chéri Bibi, is a bar/restaurant, where I go regularly, around 6/7 pm after the studio, and have a glass of white wine or a beer at the “comptoir”. The food is good too, and there’s a really nice vibe! (15 rue Andre Del Sarte in the 18th).

Where can you get the best view?
Well I love the view from the Pont du Carrousel, especially when I drove my scooter across it, coming back from a late night after a good party. Sometimes I would park my scooter and enjoy the moment, the view and the light in the morning is really something worth experiencing.

Name a real hidden gem about the city?
I‘ve always been fascinated by a building designed by Hector Guimard, Avenue Rapp, this would be my personal gem (actually I used to track down every building designed by him).

Is there something quite famous that really shouldn't be / is over-hyped in the city?
A bar in Le Marais, called La Perle!

Is there an activity you would really recommend doing?
Brunch at Milk rue d’orsel at the Abbesses, then go to 'La Halle St Pierre' if there’s a good exhibition, then to the Floreal for a beer (and if you’re really hungry, try the burger, just fantastic!), and to l’International to see underground gigs, for ex.

What is the best music venue?
I think we are blessed with good clubs/concert venues in general. In order of preference La Cigale, Le Point Ephémère, L’Olympia…

Favourite Parisian record shop?
Born Bad Records. Colette, Clément Vaché, in charge of the selection does a great job!

Favourite Parisian band?
Newcomers and upcoming act, Tristesse Contemporaine, have my full attention (released on Dirty). And I also like the band Frustration (released on Born Bad records).

Least favorite aspect about life in Paris?
Taxis!

Favorite Paris memory?
The first residency I had with Arnaud Rebotini, at the Pulp (we miss the Pulp so much!). Going to eat a kebab with a girl all d - Clash Music

"David Shaw and The Beat, The Jackal (Massimiliano Pagliara Remix)"

Whether or not you’re familiar with the name David Shaw, there’s a decent chance you’ve already heard his music. He’s perhaps better known under the alias Siskid; his bass guitar work has appeared on Black Strobe records (including the album Burn Your Own Church); and he was half of the duo Animal Machine. Now in 2012 he’s stepping out under his own name (with the addition of The Beat), a project which straddles the line between synth pop and slower indie disco sounds. His first single, Infected arrived earlier this month on Her Majesty’s Ship, but we’re already looking ahead to #2, The Jackal. As a taster, check out Massimiliano Pagliara’s wicked remix of the title track. The Rush Hour/LARJ-affiliated producer’s take marries the rump-shaking bass and hi-hats of Chicago house with synths that wind and flow like the dark cloak of Italo disco. One imagines Black Devil Disco Club and maybe some KiNK records were on Pagliara’s turntable moments before pumping this one out. Thanks to all involved for making this one available. - Little White Earbuds

"David Shaw : a mancunian in Paris"

David Shaw is a Mancunian living in Paris. You can almost hear the din of those two very different cities in his music. There’s a clear dark, industrial Manchester sound in “The Jackal,” the song we’re streaming here, but there’s also a lushness and refined nonchalance that is very Paris. “The Jackal” is from the second EP, released on Her Majesty’s Ship, leading up to a full-length, which we’ve been promised is on the way. We await with bated breath. - Hugo Boss Blog

"David Shaw and The Beat - Money Community"

To celebrate the release of his EP ‘Infected’, kind chap David Shaw is giving away a free download of track ‘Money Community’. An edited version of the 80’s tune, it sounds exactly right for an artist who never wanted to have to make the choice between guitars or machines. David Shaw has managed to find a niche in the market as an artist who lies somewhere in the middle of indie and techno, but is always original and himself. Through this profound ability to create something unique, he is already famed within the independent market through his collaborations with artists such as Blackstrobe with Rebotini and Ivan Smagghe (Beggars Banquet).

"The Nights of The Jackal"

Welcome to DMCWORLD towers David. Nice to have a fellow Manc on board! So a new name but still housing that huge commitment to music you have always had, you are now living in Paris - how has living in France influenced your ever different sounds?

"I wouldn’t say that living in Paris has had a great influence on my sounds, as I’ve always been influenced by European bands. I would say that great food and wine has had a profound effect on my music!!!"

Your last release, a cover of The The's 80s tune 'Infected' came complete with JD Twitch and Optimo remixes no less. Have you always wanted to do a cover?

"Yes I’ve always wanted to do a cover! I like the idea of a challenge, and choosing a song that defines the spectrum of all the things I love was not an easy task, but I think I’ve managed to avoid falling into the cliché of what people expect from me."

The new release 'The Jackal' EP is out now - talk us through the tracks….

"Well 'The Jackal' was released last Monday on Her Majesty’s Ship (the original and 2 rmxs). Actually the funny thing about The Jackal is that it must be at least the 5th version which explains how demanding I can be, but I’m very happy with this version. The first rmx is by Massimiliano Pagliara, the Italian producer based in Berlin, who always has a sexy refined touch in everything he does! The second rmx is by my fellow Mancunians, Pulp Disco and The Outcasts, everything they do is just amazing!"

The new album is complete and coming out also on your Her Majesty's Ship label. How long have you been working on it, how did you approach this long player?

"Well as everyone knows, an album is a tricky thing! You want to show everything you know, everything you love, and be coherent at the same time! It’s exciting and very therapeutic! I had many songs/tracks, some of them were loops, others were well advanced sessions, but as I’m pretty hard on myself, I was a bit slow at crafting the whole thing, and so I kept on writing new material! Then I decided to move all my studio to my girlfriend’s country house, and within 2 months the album was finally recorded to my satisfaction."

What is the current top 10 you are spinning in your DJ sets?

Pulp Disco & The Oucasts / Space Dust
Jimmy Edgar / This One's For The Children
International Music System / Dancing Therapy
AKA JK / 2600 2600 Mugwump Italo Broadcast
Thugfucker / Disco Gnome – Tale Of Us Remix
Martin Dawson / Think About It feat. Nicholas Ryan Gant (Maceo Plex Remix)
Tiger Stripes / Crossroads
The Rimshooters / Deep Electric Mastered
Box Codax / Naked Smile - Naum Gabo Remix
David Shaw And The Beat / The Jackal Massimilano Pagliara Rmx

You were lead guitar, bass and keyboard artist with Black Strobe, did working with Arnaud and Ivan help your music evolve in any way?

"Working with those two, was a great experience, I enjoyed touring and playing at amazing venues and festivals! It deffo has sharpen my performance on stage!"

"What is important is that the artist throughout his production makes me think, provokes interest in me". Two questions. One, who growing up made you think, and who today, if anyone provokes you with their sounds…

"Prince, Colin Newman, Tones On Tail, INXS, Martin Hannett, Aphex Twin, Fad Gadget..."

SInce 2005 you have been releasing under your pseudonym Siskid which paved the way to festivals such as Les Nuits Sonores and the mighty Sonar. Why did you decide to change your artist name this time around?

"For the very simple reason that I was fed up with with the whole Siskid thing. I wanted to evolve and concentrate on what I’m good at. As I mentioned before producing club anthems is not my thing, I like the idea of starting afresh.

What are your thoughts on the state of electronic music today - it's the new pop music in America whilst in Europe it's everywhere again...

"I think electronic music has a great future, the scene is getting better and better, there are no more bound - DMC WORLD

Hailing from Manchester, David Shaw’s musical flair was manifest from an early age. This has allowed him to evolve on the rock and electronic scene resulting in the creation of an original musical identity somewhere between techno and indie.

Since 2005, his releases under the pseudonym Siskid, « Clean Breakfast », « Hummer », « The Architect », and « She Has Reasonable Doubts » on Initial Cuts - thanks to which he has been invited to the prestigious festivals, Les Nuits Sonores, Sonar, Les Ardentes… - have conferred on him the status of resident DJ at renowned clubs including the Pulp and the Rex in Paris.

For three years, he was also the lead guitar, bass and keyboard artist during the live performances and recording sessions of the band Blackstrobe (Ivan Smagghe and Arnaud Rebotini). The outcome was the album « Burn your own Church », recorded in London with Paul Epworth, and released in 2009 on Beggars Banquet.

He then created his own imprint Meant Records, which released his Siskid electronic titles, « Wolves » (2009) and « Gun Stubs » (2010), and other projects, such as his rock band Animal Machine. After a few Siskid remixes (for Telepopmusik, Aswefall, Etienne Daho, Slove…) he has now moved on, and decided to perform under his name, David Shaw, with the release of two singles from his debut album on the brand new label, Her Majesty’s Ship.
