Commander David S. Points, U.S Navy (Retired)


Commander David S. Points is the former Director, Joint Information Bureau, Joint Task Force –160 (JTF -160), Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He was recalled to active duty February 2002 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He remained Director while the Joint Information Bureau transitioned to U. S. Army and Rhode Island Army National Guard personnel. He was awarded the Joint Service Achievement Medal and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award.

Commander David S. Points has served as the Lead Naval Reserve Public Affairs Officer for the Commander in Chief, U. S. Atlantic Fleet, Joint Task Force, Reserve Units. He is the former Commanding Officer of the Mobile Public Affairs Team Norfolk Detachment 208, Jacksonville, Florida. As a veteran, he served in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm (Persian Gulf War) with assignments in Saudi Arabia. He has been a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) public affairs officer serving in such countries as Egypt, Germany, Great Britain and Italy. Other assignments include Public Affairs Officer for the Office of Chairman of The Joint Chiefs of Staff, The Pentagon, Washington DC. Commander Points was recalled to active duty and worked as a public affairs officer on the “U.S. Navy’s Napalm Outreach Team” in California, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana and Washington DC. and was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal.

David S. Points graduated from Cass Technical High School, Detroit, Michigan. He attended Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. While at Fisk, he was elected Freshman Class President. As a sophomore, he transferred to Saginaw Valley State University, University Center, Michigan with an opportunity to be an exchange student at Poulton Le Fylde College for Teachers in Great Britain. He received a Bachelor of Arts in English.

David S. Points attended Texas Southern University, Thurgood Marshall School of Law. He completed the requirements for the law degree receiving a Doctorate of Jurisprudence from Ohio Northern University, School of Law, Ada, Ohio. Furthering his formal legal education, he received a Master of Laws in Labor Law, from the Graduate School of Law at Wayne State University (WSU), Detroit, Michigan.

David S. Points has taught Broadcasting, English, Mathematics and Special Education for the Saginaw Public Schools System, Saginaw, Michigan and the Detroit Board of Education, Detroit, Michigan. He was appointed Court Administrator and Magistrate for the State of Michigan, 30th District Court City of Highland Park. He was the first African American appointed Magistrate in the City of Highland Park. He was elected to the Michigan State Legislature and served as State Representative on the House Appropriations Committee, representing the Cities of Hamtramck, Highland Park and a portion of Detroit, Michigan. He also served as a Communications Analyst for the Michigan House of Representatives.

David S. Points was a visiting law professor at Miles Law School, Miles College, Birmingham, Alabama and has taught part-time at Lewis College of Business, Detroit, Michigan.

David S. Points has been a news reporter, news and public service director at radio stations in Florida, Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee and Texas. He has also worked as a forth caster in the steel division at Ford Motor Company, Dearborn.

David S. Points enjoys participating in the “over 40” ice hockey league and as a member of the state legislature formed the “Capitol Sticks” a bi-partisan hockey team with other legislators to raise money for the Michigan Hospice. During his legislative tenure, he had annual bus tours for outstate legislators to visit the district to see first hand the need of the district and how specific legislation would affect the district.

David S. Points is a lifelong member of Scott Memorial United Methodist Church, Detroit and was the former president of the Administrative Board and member of the Board of Trustees. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and The American Swiss Foundation. He also serves on several community advisory boards including The Lula Belle Stewart Center, Incorporated and has been elected to the Lewis College of Business, Board of Trustees. He also serves as Treasurer, Board of Trustees for CareFirst Community Health Services, American Indian Health & Family Services of Southeastern Michigan, Member and a Barbara A. Karmanos Cancer Institute Speakers Bureau volunteer.

David S. Points was inducted into Phi Beta Delta, an honor society for international scholars at Wayne State University.

Prior to his recall to military active duty, David S. Points was employed at Renaissance West Community Health Services, Detroit, Michigan as the Corporate Compliance Officer, Community Relations and Public Affairs Manager.
While on active duty Renaissance West CHS closed.
