"Local musician to perform at the Bull’s Head"

French chansons of the Fifties and the sounds of Juliette Greco and Jacques Brel resonate in the original compositions of Barnes resident, David Vaughan, whose new trio will perform their first public concert at The Bull’s Head in December.
This is a small ensemble which reflects the traditional sound of
the Fifties. Described by the composer as “a new take on an old
genre with the addition of a varied background in rock and jazz”,
David will be singing at the piano accompanied by the impressive
accordion composer and player, Romano Viazzani and the award winning young Spanish clarinettist, Daniel Broncano. They will play music written by David plus a few covers. Their launch in Barnes will be followed in the new year with a performance at Pizza Express Chelsea, The Pheasantry, in King’s Road.
The combination of instruments is unusual, particularly the accordion, but in Fifties chansons it was significant and has helped, David says, “to give a colour to the sound that I wanted. It helped to root me. And the clarinet helps to soften with the mellowness of its tone.”
To local people, David will be better known by his full name, David Vaughan Roberts. He was born and educated in Barnes. As a junior scholar from age 11 to 18, he attended the Royal College of Music after winning a scholarship awarded by Richmond. In his varied music career, he has worked as a jazz trumpeter, fusion keyboard player and songwriter and rock singer at popular venues, The Half Moon, The Comedy and The Purple Turtle. He is a music lecturer and has composed music for radio and film. He now lives in Barnes with his wife and young family.

Bio

David Vaughan’s new trio was set up in 2011 on the basis of original songs written from 2010 onwards. The aim from the very beginning was to create something that few were used to hearing - an intimate and unusual marriage of piano, accordion and clarinet performing new songs influenced by popular continental songwriting of the mid 20th century and by traditional and contemporary forms of music theatre, classical music, jazz and folk. And all of this led by Vaughan's rich, baritonal voice forged in the furnace of modern rock and pop. The result has proved a winner for audiences across London. With renowned accordionist, Romano Viazzani, and prize-winning clarinetist, Daniel Broncano, at his side, Vaughan has performed in major jazz and cabaret venues such as Pizza Express' 'The Pheasantry' on the King's Road in Chelsea, and The Bull's Head jazz club in Barnes. Future plans include an initial live album to be recorded by the end of 2013 and a European tour in 2014.
