Bio

“ I feel as though hip-hop is currently reaching that 'new generation' and I just want to be one of the hands that get it there.”

David Versis

Diligent and focused, David Versis is a part of the new generation of hip-hop. His music is as versatile as the wide range of influences that have shaped him to be the artist he is today. Being raised in a musical family gave Versis all the ammunition he needed to develop his own artistic identity. Apart from singing and rapping, David dabbles in a handful of instruments including piano, drums and bass, all self taught. His main instrument of choice though, is guitar: both acoustic and electric.

David has been in and out of several bands, but his musical career started at a very early age - since he was 10-11 years old singing in his church’s choir. At age 16 he started experimenting with hip-hop; primarily production and rhyme composition. Shortly after, he formed his first hip-hop group, Red Tape Regime, with friend Nick and current manager Joshua Richards. After the group dismantled a year later, David continued to experiment with different instruments and fell in love with guitar. “I felt that I connected with many classic guitarists such as Jimmy Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy; their music and their message,” David says. As a result, he formed Shades of Blue, a blues-funk based band, where he was lead singer and guitarist. They played gigs in Toronto and surrounding areas covering popular tracks as well as original records. The band dismantled 6 months later.

It was all a learning experience and Versis used that knowledge to develop his own style of music.

“I feel as though there is a certain authenticity within my music that utilizes my various influences, without compromising who I am as an artist. Hip-hop has evolved into a genre that not only accepts a wide range of sounds, approaches, and styles, but calls for it. While this has forced other artists to widen their perspective, I am naturally a product of a mosaic of musical styles.”

Influenced by a fusion of genres and artists, Versis is inspired by the legacy of greats from Biggie to Jimmy Hendrix, Outkast to the Beatles, Jay Z to Elvis Presley, and plans to one day achieve similar success.
David Versis music is lyrical, with heart. His sound is soulful, but progressive. His delivery is astounding and his content vibrant. You can live each experience word for word.

David Versis has released 2 free projects over the web.
