BandRockFunk

Dawn in the City is an eclectic Funk Rock group that plays high energy rhythm and blues music with a whole lot of soul. The glare of the sun and the rush of the ocean flood echoing between the concrete walls of civilization... this is the sound of Dawn In The City.

Biography

Dawn in the City is a four piece Rock|Funk|Soul band from Edmonton, Alberta. Started in 2006 as the brainchild of Bernal Ibarra(Vocals, Lead Guitar, Organ and Keys) and Andrea Dawn Coulston(Drummer and Manager). Mike Glessing(Guitar and Vocals) came into the project early enough to be considered a founding member. More recently, they have added a new bass player by the name of Steve Mardling who they met over the years as members of the local scene. They play an eclectic mix of up-tempo, funky, soulful originals and cover all the great dancing tunes that are sure to get a crowd up and moving. They are currently co-producing their first full length album called "Groove In Every Stitch" with Singer/Songwriter/Producer Todd Dunsmore. Album is set to release in the next few months. Dawn in the City's front man Bernal Ibarra is a dynamic performer whose style is infused with diverse musical tastes, mixing classic soul vocals, driving R&B organ, brazen funk rhythms and fiery rock and roll guitar. Almost 4 years later, they are still hard at it, refining their skills and inspirations to define the Dawn In The City sound, present and future

Lyrics

The Path

Written By: Bernal Ibarra

Watching the stars appear above in oceanic skies
Each point of light transported from another space in time
Reaching the beating hearts and infiltrating wishful minds
Wisdom of eons are encoded in a pinprick shine

Diamonds and stripes all over
The face of the night
Flicks on the switch of my little searchlight

The path to heaven is a lifelong road
Building a temple’s only stone by stone
No consequences but the ones you chose, you chose
Appending the book with everything you wrote

Fire and water mix with the earth and wind
Angels of death are trailing in the places that you’ve been
Dreaming and dancing on a million year old plane
Risen to motion underneath a brilliant ball of flame

Nobody knows the creation
For a long time to come
Frightening, dangerous, beautiful kingdom

The path to heaven is a lifelong road
Building a temple’s only stone by stone
No consequences but the ones you chose, you chose
Appending the book with everything you wrote

Strangers in sandals gather on the hills of grass
Lives are connected in the collection of our pasts
Hostility dampered by the presence of the eyes of fate
Minutes of life counting down as we celebrate

Diamonds and stripes all over
The face of the night
Flicks on the switch of my little searchlight

The path to heaven is a lifelong road
Building a temple’s only stone by stone
No consequences but the ones you chose, you chose
Appending the book with everything, everything, everything you wrote

The path to heaven is a lifelong road
Building a temple’s only stone by stone
No consequences but the ones you chose, you chose
Appending the book with everything that you wrote, that you wrote

Footprints

Written By: Bernal Ibarra

Baby you can hear me
But you know I'm not around
I'm sitting in a darkened room
On the other side of town
The line that separates us
Has thickened much too wide
I wait in my sand castle
For the cold crash of the tide
I've been here for three days now
Because I can't stand the light
My stomach is still burning
Since last I left your sight
I didn't mean to hurt you
I never meant to hurt your pride
But you left me crushed and hollow
Like a footprint in the tide
This war of love is over
My soldiers long since dead
We started out as allies
And became enemies instead
In battles fuelled by passion
We conquer and divide
And bury our fallen soldiers
In the wet sand of the tide.

Look Out Below

Written By: Bernal Ibarra

Look out below
Look out below
Look out below
People look out below.
Two bombs so far,
Ten thousand more to go,
It's just a stone's throw.
It's just a stone's throw away.

Get underground
Get underground
Get underground
People get underground.
You think that it could never happen in your town
Civilization never breaks down.
Civilization never breaks down.

You got no right to put guns in the sky
You got no right to pull the wool over everybody's eyes
'Cause this world is mine, and it's hers and yours and his,
You gotta take those weapons out of space, got to learn to mind your own biz.
You gotta take those weapons out of space, got to learn to mind your own biz.
You gotta take those weapons out of space!

Do you trust the man?
Do you trust the man?
Not to get greedy with that power in his hands
It ain't worth the risk
It ain't worth a damn
And it ain't up to you Sam.
And it ain't up to you Sam...it never was!

The time has come
The time has come
Fire of the sun
Down to the Earth has come.
Push of the button can never be undone

Where you gonna, where you gonna, where you gonna, where you gonna,
where you gonna, where you gonna, where you gonna run?

Get Up N' Jam

Written By: Bernal Ibarra

I don’t want to eat your strawberry!
I just want to get up and jam
I don’t want to join your military
I just want to get up and jam
I don’t want to pick your high hangin’ cherry
I just want to get up and jam
I don’t want to dig up the bones you bury
I just want to, I want to get up and jam.

I don’t want to eat your strawberry!
I just want to make some love
I don’t want to join your military
I just want to make some love
I don’t want to pick your high hangin’ cherry
I just want to make some love
I don’t want to dig up the bones you bury
I just want to, I want to make some love.

I don’t want to eat your strawberry!
I just want to get respect.
I don’t want to join your military
I just want to get respect.
I don’t want to pick your high hangin’ cherry
I just want to get respect.
I don’t want to dig up the bones you bury
I just want to, I want to get some respect.

Sugarstack

Written By: Bernal Ibarra

I’ve got somethin’ that’s sure hard not to do
I’ve got somethin’, sure help me get along with you
You don’t know,
You don’t even know
About my sugar, sugar, sugar, sugarstack

When I get that feelin’, I never let it pass me by
I’m stacked to the limit, so funky on my own supply
You don’t know
I got myself a black cat bone
And I got my sugar, sugar, sugar, sugarstack

Never paid a nickel, never had to pay a cent
I’ve just got the funk yall, so call me the President
I got soul
I got the rock and roll
And I got my sugar, sugar, sugar, sugarstack

People!
Clap your hands
People!
Stomp your feet
C’mon, with me!
Make demands
C’mon with me!
Take back the street
People!
Clap your hands
People!
Stomp your feet
C’mon, with me!
Make demands
C’mon with me!
Take back the street
People!
Clap your hands
People, people, listen to me
I said hey….yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Honda Civic

Written By: Dawn in the City

Honda Civic

Me and my homies are the kings of the block
We make some mad money with our corner chop shop
Things are pretty cool when nobody messes with us
I just stepped outside and the window's been busted
on my Honda Civic

Maybe it was that jerk in 222
I seen his pimped out Monte Carlo on the avenue
I don't know if it was that hustler or not
Just to be sure I'm gonna puncture all the tires on this lot

Nobody better touch my sweet sweet ride
Nobody better mess with it
Oh, don't you touch my Honda Civic

Broken glass on my leather bucket seats
When I catch that bozo, I'm gonna feed him the beats
And what kind of degenerate would do a cowardly thing like this?
Could have been that sucker whose Camaro we hotwired just for kicks

I need to score some more methamphetamine
A guy like that doesn't deserve to be fought clean
I know some wiseguys and some criminals too
There's gonna be a massive payback
The minute that I find out who touched my
Honda Civic

Nobody better touch my sweet sweet ride
Nobody better mess with it
Oh, don't you touch my Honda Civic

We hit the clubs with all the Marlon Brandos
We spend our income on cheap liquor and expensive clothes
Japanese body panels and spinners made of chrome
When it comes to racing, yeah, we'll shut you down in any 60 zone

If you show up in our neighborhood, don't you be on our list
We'll jump you from the alley and acquaint you with our fists
Don't even bother, don't even bother trying to report us to the cops
Because they can't do nothing, man,
They haven't even shut down our grow-op

Nobody better touch my sweet sweet ride
Nobody better mess with it
Oh, don't you touch my Honda Civic

Grey Hoodie

Written By: Bernal Ibarra

I ain’t lyin’,
I got a real bad boogie
Wait ‘till you see what I got
In the pockets of my grey hoodie
I ain’t jivin’, no,
Said it’s a no-no goodie
You wanna have a good time,
You got to put on my grey hoodie

Standin’ over there,
Just doin’ your thing
Keep hangin’ on the lamp post,
Said you’re bound to know my name
Come on over here
Let me kiss your mouth
I just wanna warm you up girl,
I wanna make you stone freak out

Put it on, put it on girl
Put it on, put it on girl
Put it on, put it on girl
Come on and be my, come on and be my,
Put it on, put it on girl
Put it on, put it on girl
Put it on, put it on, well,
I want you to put on my grey hoodie.

My attire
Is such a funky pullover
And there ain’t no woman too bad enough
That my love can’t cover
My desire
Don’t cost no money
Said I just wanna pull the drawstrings
On your grey hoodie, honey

So come on out
Have yourself a good boogie
Don’t forget when you come to the show
Put on your grey hoodie
Don’t stay home
That would be a real pity
Don’t you know,
Everybody wants to party tonight
With Dawn in the City.

Put it on, put it on girl
Put it on, put it on girl
Put it on, put it on girl
Come on and be my, come on and be my,
Put it on, put it on girl
Put it on, put it on girl
Put it on, put it on, well,
I want you to put on my grey hoodie.

I went down to Nanaimo Beach
But all the regular hoodies were sold
My man said don’t you worry,
I’m a-put you in somethin’ for when your ass gets cold
And it just so happens
I got a shipment of somethin’ last week
And when you put this on,
You will find that it is quite unique
You see this is a special grey hoodie
And it’s starting to become in high demand
‘Cause it comes from the imagination of
A very funky little Edmonton band
It’s got Groove In Every Stitch
And funk fabric built right into the hood
You put this on tomorrow,
You’ll be the coolest dude in your neighborhood!

Bic Lighter

Written By: Bernal Ibarra

You’ve ground away your vocals
Tryin’ to burn away that cancer with your
Bic lighter
All of your disbelievin’ and your grievin’s gonna be gone
Lost in the fire

Puff me,
Love me,
Leave me,
Stub me,
Crush me,
Believe me
Puff me,
Love me,
Leave me,
Stub me,
Crush me,
Believe me

You been smokin’ out your brains,
Tryin’ to find that burning bush behind that flick
Go on, set your mind to flames,
But don’t blame me if you can’t remember…
Maybe it’s time to quit now
It’s time to quit

You won’t come out your bedroom,
Tryin’ to burn away the crack shakes with a
Silver zippo
All of your cheatin’ and your self-defeatin’ make me wanna
Give you a punch in the lippo!

Puff me,
Love me,
Leave me,
Stub me,
Crush me,
Believe me
Puff me,
Love me,
Leave me,
Stub me,
Crush me,
Believe me

You been chokin’ on refrains,
Tryin’ to find your perfect beat behind that click
Go on, sing your song the same,
But don’t blame me if you can’t remember
Maybe it’s time to quit now
It’s time to quit

Don’t you stop breathin’ now,
You know that it’s not your time
I might get quite cross with you
Because I hate to watch you dyin’, dyin’
Come on, let me stand you up
You know I was a troubled child
But all we got is each other now
Come on,
Let’s not waste away the while

Puff me,
Love me,
Leave me,
Stub me,
Crush me,
Believe me
Puff me,
Love me,
Leave me,
Stub me,
Crush me,
Believe me
