AMHERST - From a small fundraiser in 1989 involving just 49 bikes, Tantramar Toys for Tots has come a long way in 20 years.
From that initial $1,500 for new toys for children in Sackville, Dorchester and Port Elgin, N.B., Toys for Tots has generated more than $160,000 in toys and cash for families and children in five communities and two provinces.
"It's hard to believe, really," said Bruce Sears, who came on board a couple of years into the annual motorcycle event. "It's amazing when you think of just how many people have been touched by this over the years. It's really amazing that it has gone 20 years and I hope it goes for at least 20 more."
The 20th Tantramar Toys for Tots will go Saturday, beginning with registration at McDonald's Restaurant in Sackville, N.B., with participants enjoying a quarter-pounder before hitting the road at 2 p.m. with Codiac RCMP motorcycle officers leading the way.
The route is a little different this year with much better traffic control thanks to the efforts of the Canadian Army Veterans Motorcycle Club.
"The reason for the route change is that the number of motorcycles keeps increasing each year, which is great, but that adds significantly to the traffic tie-ups and safety concerns," organizer Mike Purdy said.
"We're hoping that the families who normally wait for us along the route will take their families to the new route. A great part of the event for the bikers is waving to the kids that line the route."
The bikers will make their way around the Sackville area before wrapping up at the Tantramar Veterans' Memorial Civic Centre.
There'll be numerous souvenirs for purchase and a demonstration at 4:30 p.m. featuring the motorcycle stunt team Production-X.

Blues Jam at Georges's Roadhouse

The Tantramarsh Blues Society monthly blues jam is planned for this Sunday, January 24 from 3 - 7 pm at George's Roadhouse 67 Lorne Street in Sackville NB. The jam will be hosted by the house band - DS Smith and the Streamliners and all musicians and blues-lovers are invited to come out and join us for a very laid back and entertaining musical event. There will be a collection taken at the door and the band has waived their fee for this day - to enable all the proceeds to be donated to the Haiti Relief Fund. In fact there may even be some raffle items up for grabs! So please - make an afternoon of it and come out and join us.

In February of 1999, a group of veteran musicians began jamming in a basement. On October 2, 1999, this same group made their public debut in Sackville, New Brunswick with a follow up two weeks later in Moncton, New Brunswick. Currently based out of the Amherst, NS/Sackville, NB area, “The Streamliners” continue to make a name for themselves both among the general public and among fellow musicians.
Since their early beginnings, “The Streamliners” have come to enjoy a loyal following within the region and are now being invited to perform at local Blues Festivals. “The Streamliners” performed four shows at the 10th Annual Fredericton Jazz & Blues Festival in September, 2000. Audience response was excellent.
With a wide range of musical talent and an even wider repertoire ranging from West Coast Swing, Delta, Chicago and East Coast Blues, “The Streamliners” are beginning to fill a void that exists on the blues scene in this region. While their music is harmonica oriented, listeners will enjoy a well-rounded portion of guitar solos as well!
“The Streamliners” have been playing to live audiences for many years with repeat patrons enjoying the music. With some original material now in their repertoire, the band has recorded and is sporting a new CD called Lucky.
“The Streamliners” would like to thank those fans who have supported them from their beginnings to the present.
