"Pop-Alt-Rock with infectious melodies"

Biography

A fateful meeting with a New York bass player looking to relocate to Toronto ignited the creative energy that was to become Deacon Lot.

Formed in 2005, Deacon Lot is the latest musical incarnation of guitarist/sometimes-singer/songwriter Michael Shostak. After a couple of years away from the music scene, Shostak is back with longtime friend and drummer David Shiewitz and is joined by bassist and New York native JP. Together, the trio have set out to create pop-alt-rock with infectious melodies. Part indie-rock. Part power-pop. All heart.

Lyrics

Obvious

Written By: Michael Shostak

Crazy days in a crazy place
When desperation is your only face
Deep inside your hall of dreams
Coming down never felt so real

But I... never wanted to be on my own
And I... never fell into that comfort zone
But there are times you want to disappear
You hide inside your house of fear

It’s obvious

Double-time in a double-feature
Sentenced to life with your inner preacher
Your never-ending will never start
Falling down, it never felt so hard

But I... never wanted to be on my own
And I... never fell into that comfort zone
But there are times you want to disappear
You crawl inside your skin of fear

It’s obvious

But I... never wanted to be on my own
And I... never fell into your comfort zone
But there are times you want to disappear
The choices you have made are clear

It’s obvious

Measuring the World

Written By: Michael Shostak

Big trees and cobblestone hearts
Distant valleys and the mountains they part
Lines are drawn just to make it pretty for me

24K, a jumbled up place
What’s the prize for winning this chase?
Fix the miles; it doesn’t add up for me

Head along, count the seas
Sometimes baby it’s a mystery
And I... I’ll paint a map for me

Oceans vast, our souls are deep
Horizons keep that sky out of reach
Grids are cast just to make it easy for me

1.3 to the 25
Where’s the bridge that gets us so high?
Grease the wheels; ‘cause it’s too slow for me

Head along, count the seas
Sometimes baby it’s a mystery
And I... I’ll paint a map for me

What Can I Do

Written By: Michael Shostak

What can I do
The days are far too short
The night is very long
Can’t stay here anymore

But what can I do
When the thoughts won’t go away
The feelings are too strong
Can’t hide them anymore

And what will you do
When I tell you that I’m done
That I feel like moving on
I can’t keep being wrong

Every time I turn around
I get the feeling that I’m falling down
And I can’t help thinking about you
What can I do?

What can I say
To help you understand
To show that it’s true
I have to find my way

And how will you feel
When the days become too short
The night will be so long
And I won’t be here any more

Every time I turn around
I get the feeling that I’m falling down
And I can’t help thinking about you
What can I do?
