"New Music from Portugal"

There’s a vogue for musicians to make albums apparently designed as for a nonexistent film, which mostly fail to hold attention for very long, without any memory of visual images to complete the picture.
On first listen, the debut album by the Lisbon-based duo The Dead Combo seemed to belong in that Imaginary Soundtrack box. Individual tracks sounded fine when slipped onto the radio, but my attention started wandering when I played the album all the way through at home. But since seeing the group play live, I hear their record with different ears.

Bio

Tó Trips and Pedro Gonçalves are Dead Combo.
The group was formed in 2003 by an invitation of Henrique Amaro from Antena 3 radio, to record the track “Paredes Ambience” included in the homage CD to the genius of the Portuguese guitar Carlos Paredes, “Movimentos Perpétuos – Music for Carlos Paredes”.

They incarnate two characters that could have come from a comic: a caretaker and a gangster.

The band has released 5 albums so far having 3 of them been awarded “Record of the Year” and “Record of the Decade” in Portugal. “Vol.1” the band’s debut album was received as “...a breath of fresh air...” in the Portuguese music scene. “Vol.2 - Quando a Alma Não é Pequena” also received the record of the year award.

In 2008 they released their third studio album “Lusitânia Playboys” . The album was awarded the record of the year and record of the decade awards.

In 2009 they’ve recorded a live DVD with “Orquestra das Caveiras”/ “Skull orchestra” that originated a Portuguese theater tour selling out some of the venues.

The band has played in all major venues and festivals in Portugal and prepares their international first steps with performances booked for Hungary, Estonia, Czechoslovakia.
