"Deadiron - Out of the Rust and Ruin"

Deadiron is a melodic metal band hailing from the Cleveland, Ohio area (actually just a few miles from my home) and Out of the Rust and Ruin represents the band's debut album. I debated about what the main genre of this album should be and I have settled on melodic death metal because it does have a Scandinavian flavor to it. The reason I hesitate is because the album has no extreme vocals. Lead singer Alexander Van Ness does have a rather unique hardcore punk semi extreme snarl to his voice on and off throughout the album, but his vocals are generally clean and rather animated. In fact, there is some hardcore punk influence scattered throughout the album including some shouts by the band in response to Alexander's singing at times. In additon to the Scandinavian influence, the music also contains some power metal influence, Maiden type heavy metal influence and some thrash influence including maybe a touch of groove metal on occasion. All these influences make for an interesting melodic metal album that certainly has a bit of an extreme metal vibe to it much of the time. The songs certainly are catchy and pretty well executed. This is certainly a very promising melodic metal release that is rather unique because of the amount of metal influences found on the album. It also shows me that this band is ready for some national attention.

"[Album Review] Deadiron – Out of the Rust and Ruin"

By Gene Natale, Jr. // Staff Writer

In Out of the Rust and Ruin, Cleveland thrashers Deadiron saddle up their (metaphorical) steeds and present a well-rounded metallic sound; a sound synthesis of its members’ diverse musical influences. The debut full-length album from the group is indeed as powerful as the brutal album art (shown above).

The string-and-acoustic-guitar driven intro track lays an epic groundwork for the first song “Unite”, the first of many fist-pounding anthems that sound like a call to action for true believers of metal. Lead vocalist Alex Van Ness has a delivery that seems to be very inspired by elements of his own punk rock and hardcore background, when paried with the Iron Maiden-esque sound of the music accompanying his vocal, Deadiron provides a metallic soundscape that will appeal to any die-hard metal fan of the 80s that is updated for the present day.

Very brutals (sic)
Shredtastic much? Lead guitarist Tyler Harvey certainly stretches out his fleet fingers throughout; high water marks include his solos on the songs “Legacy of Thunder” and “Underdog”, the latter song one of three Deadiron jams re-recorded from earlier demos. In contrast to the earlier songs that Deadiron recorded, everything just simply sounds fuller – like Deadiron in HD! The heavy staccato riffage comes at the listener with a healthy dose of fuzz, creating a heavy, almost sticky sound that pleases the eardrums like a sticky swath of peanut butter stuck on the inside of one’s mouth. Van Ness’ vocals sound much improved on this album as well from the previous recordings, as he seems to be allowing more elements of melody creep into his hardcore vocal style.

Van Ness is definitely a skilled singer, and he teams up with bassist J Bennett to create some great vocal harmonies, especially throughout the final track “Under the Midnight Stars”. Bennett, who shares an affinity for the vocal stylings of Alice in Chains with the author of this piece, finds just the right place to reside vocally to properly accent Van Ness’ melodic vocal forays.

The only slight to the album is that some element of the band’s true force seems to be missing in the translation. Anyone who has seen the band perform live would certainly know what I’m talking about, but that is but a tiny drop of dissent in a sea of rocktitude. Anyone who loves metal, and especially thrash, will absolutely love this album. The thrashers will debut their album at their official CD Release show this Saturday, March 10th at Peabody’s Concert Club. Admission is free (with a flier from their Facebook page) and will also feature supporting acts Ruled By Reason, The Approach and the Execution, Abandon All Hope, IAMREVENGE, Taken By Talons, and several others. Rockin!

"Deadiron: Playing with a Chip on their Shoulder"

Bringing together the best that metal has to offer by way of influences ranging from Sandinavian melodic death to American thrash icons like Metallica and Pantera and the East Coast hardcore sound of Blood for Blood and Madball this band plays with a chip on it's shoulder.

"Born in a trailer park in Cleveland's east side
From the first day of birth, he'd wished he'd died
His father fought in Vietnam, wished his son a better life
Give the kid a comic book, said heroes conquer strife"

Those are the opening lyrics to the first track on Deadiron's 3 song EP. The track in question ("Underdog") just about sums up the attitude of these Cleveland natives. Bringing together the best that metal has to offer by way of influences ranging from Sandinavian melodic death to American thrash icons like Metallica and Pantera and the East Coast hardcore sound of Blood for Blood and Madball this band plays with a chip on it's shoulder. Unless you've lived in Ohio (especially in the Cleveland area) and have suffered through our cold winters and hot summers you'll be hard pressed to understand why this area creates these sort of brutal bands. With an economy in ruins (even more so than the national scene), severe poverty and high crime there are just parts of Ohio that are quite frankly depressing. These are the ideal conditions needed to create such a hard hitting and gritty band of misfits. As it is Deadiron were formed when vocalist/bassist Alexander Van Ness (formerly of Neonatal Death and punk band the Brazen Rogues) meet guitarist/backing vocalist Sunny Kolattukudy in 2008. It wouldn't be until 2010 though that Deadiron would really get off the ground though and in that short amount of time of the band has already made quite an impact on the local scene. With a full-length album due out later in 2011 the band looks primed to quickly rise up the ranks of heavyweight Ohio metal acts. If this EP is any indication of what awaits us Deadiron should be a household name within a short time. With nods to acts like Megadeth and Iron Maiden written in blood within these riffs this is one EP that is just way to short! By the time you really get to enjoying it the EP is all wrapped up. Looks as if I will have to make a trek out to experience these guys live because all this one did was make me long for more. Find out for yourself why Deadiron should be in every one's metal collection at their website below. And if your in Ohio be sure to check out the band live if you get the chance. - Heavy Metal Time Machine

"Ain’t No Rusty Cage: Interview with Deadiron"

Deadiron has been emerging over the past couple years to be one of the most lovable and brutal acts to hit Cleveland in recent times. You’ll find their stickers throughout Lakewood and East Cleveland, on bike racks, telephone poles, and occasional store windows. After seeing them play a basement show over Halloween a couple years ago, I’ve been following these Viking metal gods from afar, and rooting them on to further success. They were kind enough to answer (with gusto!) some questions for us.

Who is Deadiron?
-Alex Van Ness – Frontman and Lead Vocalist. A founding member of Deadiron and former member of Cleveland’s punk band, the Brazen Rogues. Alex is a very high energy performer who blends melodic singing with hardcore delivery. His lyrical topics focus around relatable issues from his own urban life experiences here in Cleveland.
-Tyler J. Harvey – Lead Guitarist and Backing Vocalist. Ty’s musical mastery is never more apparent than in his melodic lead lines and memorable guitar solos. The youngest member of Deadiron, Tyler is as purist in his classic metal tastes as he is educated about all styles of guitar and music, having graduated Case with a music degree and attended workshops at Berklee.
-Sunny Kolattukudy – Rhythm Guitar, Backing Vocalist, and Management. In addition to being a major player in the song writing process, Sunny organizes the band as a business. Having left medical school to pursue a career in music with Deadiron, Sunny brings a professional level of drive and a detail-oriented mindset to the band.
-J Bennett – Bassist and Backing Vocalist. A veteran of the northeast Ohio music scene, J has played in acts such as Von Isley and Subtle End. J’s energetic performance and playstyle was the perfect fit in Deadiron, and vocally he adds harmonies to Alex’s lines. J’s background in theatre is also a wonderful asset and makes him an excellent stage manager for the band.
-Thomas P. Walling – Percussion. Tom is as precise as a machine but also is one of the most creative band members. His intricate and varied rhythms are the foundation of Deadiron. Tom Walling is also a major contributor to Deadiron’s writing process and lyrical direction.

How did you get together to form Deadiron? What’s the shady, intriguing band history?
Deadiron began as a side project by Sunny and Alex, while things were winding down with the Brazen Rogues and Sunny was still in medical school. There were a few member changes in the earliest days including one time Deadiron bass player, Clarke Buchanan, who is now a major art designer for the band. Drummer Mark Rheaume was also in the band during those formative years. The core structure of many of the songs on “Out of the Rust and Ruin” were written during that time, though you’d barely recognize some of them. It was nearly four years into Deadiron’s existence that the pair met lead guitarist, Tyler, and the band started really picking up momentum (we also started hugging a lot more after this point). Shortly thereafter, Deadiron went on to record their self-titled EP with producer Dave Piatek. Recording with Dave Piatek was a sometimes uncomfortable learning process for the band, but immensely valuable for development. Alex, Sunny, and Tyler set out to get the most capable roster of professional musicians together to record the full length album. Thomas P. Walling was referred to the band by a mutual friend and became the drummer of Deadiron after merely a brief interview. Bassist J. Bennett came into the fold and Alex set down his bass to become dedicated to vocals and fronting the band. With the final lineup in place, Deadiron went on to compete in the national heavy metal contest, Project Independent, for unsigned artists and won second place in the nation among 360 bands (many of whom had been around much longer, with larger fanbases). Encouraged by the gathering buzz and momentum, the band returned to Dave Piatek to record the full length album, “Out of the Rust and Ruin,” which is to be released March 10th. Deadiron is currently in the process of filming a music video for the album’s first single, “On the Line” which will also be premiered on March 10th.

How long have you been playing (individually and together?)
Though Deadiron was formed in 2007 we consider September of 2010 our official start date, when Tyler joined. Most of us have been playing music at some level all of our lives.

Tell us about the upcoming album – are there any specific songs you particularly want to talk about? What is the inspiration for the title? Is there a theme for the whole album?
The album title, the band name, and much of our musical content on “Out of the Rust and Ruin” was inspired by the post-industrial wasteland that Cleveland, like many cities in the Midwest, has become. Instrumentally, the album blends European melodic death metal, classic New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and American hardcore punk. The first single from the album is a song entitled - Panduhmoniac

"Unsigned & Streamed: Deadiron"

Why should major label bands be the only ones who get love? Unsigned & Streamed is a new column where we stream a song from an unsigned band we at Metal Insider really dig.
This week, we’re proud to put the spotlight on Cleveland’s Deadiron. The five piece band has been making a name for themselves in their home city’s live circut. In fact, Deadiron recently performed for Metal Sanaz and Project Independent in their talent search for the best independent band, and were the only metal band from Cleveland to make the cut for the national competition (online voting for this starts on December 1). The band’s sound is an interesting blend of melodic metal and hardcore, with Iron Maiden and At The Gates style riffs mixed with the aggression of bands like Blood For Blood. So without further ado, take a listen to a song off of Deadiron’s three song demo (available for download via the band’s website) called “Underdog” in the stream below.

Deadiron are currently putting the finishing touches on their debut full length album, which is expected to be released in early 2012. Check out the band’s official website and Facebook page to keep up to date on upcoming shows and releases.
If you’re in an unsigned band and would like to participate in Unsigned & Streamed, email a link to your band’s music and a brief bio to tips [at] metalinsider.com for consideration - Metal Insider

Bio

Born on the storm-battered industrial-wasteland of Lake Eries shores, Cleveland metal titans Deadiron find themselves on the precipice of change. Since their inception in 2010, the five-piece endured struggles that would have broken many. Dire economic conditions, line-up changes, and a political climate rife with tension have torn apart many a band, but those elements only forged members Alexander Van Ness, Tyler Harvey, J Bennett, Thomas Walling, and Kenny Streza into a unit bound and determined for musical domination. Those caustic ingredients, married with the varied music influences and shared discipline of the quintet, have given birth to Deadirons signature sound: a thunderous blend of hope and ferocity as melodic as it is pummeling. Charging down a path the likes of which only they can tread, Deadiron stands poised to lay siege to the music scene wherever their banner will sail.
