"Valley Fiesta Review"

A last minute change to the Fiesta program saw Dead Shades hit it next. It was 1:30pm at this point and my sore, recovering head was well in need of some dirty, bluesy rock and roll. Like a blacksmith would with steel, this three-piece forged a smile on my face for their entire 30-minute set, as they sang about women with eyes like the devil and being attacked by Chermside-inspired flat caps. - Danielle Golding, Scene Magazine

"Big Sound Live Day 2 - Brisbane (09.09.10)"

"It’s bluesy rock with a grunge edge, with chunky riffs and prominent bass. ...supporting great acts such as Grand Atlantic and Black Cab, it’s not hard to see how they’ve been playing some great shows and house parties lately. The songs have been beefed up a bit, possibly to run alongside the hard rock bands playing ...with them, but it still retains a unique feel for the night."

- Andrew Wade, The AU Review

"Black Cab, Grand Atlantic, Dead Shades @ The Hi-Fi, 17.07.10"

"The band – Brian 'Braan' L'Huillier (who also leads garage-blues trio Lovers Of Modern Art) on guitar and vocals, music photographer Dane Beesley on bass and Crystle Fleper aka Fleepwood Mac on drums – pump out one rowdy stomper after another, the tribal drum beats and rough-arse guitar riffs resonating off the venue's walls. I also finally gather who they remind me of the most – renowned UK auteur Billy Childish and his myriad projects. Props!"

- Denis Semchenko, The AU Review

Bio

Blood in the sand, saloon doors swinging in empty bars, cowering women and children, a lone gunman strides towards a mounted posse, grizzled and readied for his fate. One last desperate lunge from the one woman that still cares for him shrugged mercilessly to the ground. Dead Shades play like a concept album, of jaw-dropping machismo, desert-blues, and a pre-peyote blues explosion, but there’s is a universe inhabited by haunted darkness, by the anti-hero’s of Eastwood, the femme fatales of Hitchcock; they are the western where the good guys don’t wear white.

Renowned for electric live shows, shandies and late night hypodermic noodles this band of Rock ‘n Roll outlaws from Brisbane reads like a who’s who: Lovers Of Modern Art frontman Brian L’Huillier (ex-The Daybridges), [A:M] constituent Crystle Fleper (ex-Hot Rubber Glove), and Rolling Stone photographer and Le Fricken Hecks bassist Dane Beesley.

Sex, sand and wah pedals may sound oh-so-LA with Wavves and Best Coast setting blogs wagging but the Dead Shades are less concerned with on-shore winds and left-hand breaks and set their sights on the wide open spaces of death valley, it’s tall shadows and abandoned gas stations, it’s howling winds and tumbling weeds, it’s crumbling infrastructure and merciless heat. If solitude is bliss, the Australian trio have captured the hiss, moans and torment of its uncertainty.

A motley crew of the good the bad and the kooky, the Dead Shades play their brand of menacing cow-blues with hip-shaking, bourbon-soaked, pantie-wringing rifferama. Dirtier than your drunken stepfather, the Dead Shades are a Nick Cave revenge fantasy gone rogue, a Tex-as Perkins fronted Beasts of…Shandy.

There Will Be Riffs. - DAN GILL

Dead Shades are the type of band that inspire writers like Dan Gill to spew forth magnificent, Hunter S Thompson- esque prose to conjure up what the band might sound like if they’ve not yet trampled onto your musical radar.

Debuting their scuzzy garage blues rock at Byron Bay's Great Northern Hotel in February, the trio have since crashed a bunch of house parties with Velociraptor, played Paddington Fair, Valley Fiesta, supported the inimitable Black Cab, were showcased on a guerrilla Big Sound showcase and created buzz in their hometown and abroad.

The Brisbane trio were together for all of five minutes before heading into the studio with Skritch Trembles at the helm to produce their Sea Shandies EP. It’s as if Dan Auerbach wrote songs for the Dandy Warhols. It's a little psychedelic and 60s rock rooted in the blues. It's grunge without the flannel. It's a neat little debut from a Brisbane trio who love a good shandy and a cranking tune, with stunning artwork by boutique Brisbane designers Harper's Got Milk.

Sea Shandies and the infamous DS tees and hoodies are available online now at deadshades.com and will be officially released through Bird Fire Records in November, before the band hit Los Angeles for shows in December.
