"Dead Turquoise - EP"

I know nothing and still know almost nothing about this band, a one man act from Columbus, Ohio.

3 songs, not quite 7 minutes, a small sampling of what’s to come for his upcoming full length, which apparently he’s in the process of writing. On his bandcamp he has the tags, Grunge, Shoegaze and Surf Punk, which is a pretty accurate example of what you’re going to get through these three songs. Normally I would cringe when hearing those tags and wonder what kind of garage band garbage was going to issue from the speakers, but, his sound seems to step a little above the elements. In the end it feels like mid-90’s, summer jams from laid back indie bands. Kinda catchy, kinda cool, kinda happy, but, kinda not.

The first song, Romper, is an instrumental track. It’s definitely the weakest of the songs and would have benefited from some vocals or perhaps a direction. It feels like a few left over riffs that worked but couldn’t find a home in a “proper” song. The first riff is kind of catchy and the other two have a nice melody but it never really goes anywhere. It could have been 30 seconds and had as much impact.

The next two songs are much stronger with the vocals giving them a big boost and solidifying that mid-90’s sound. There’s not a whole that can be said, no need to dissect them. Like most good indie songs you can’t really figure out why you like this over that or why one band does it better than another and that’s the beauty. It’s shifting mid-tempo melody with a hook and a bounce.

I like what I hear and look forward to his next step.

"REVIEW: DEAD TURQUOISE - EP"

Dead Turquoise are a one man band from Columbus Ohio formed by a man named Ted. I was introduced to this band earlier today by a friend who had been sent a copy of this EP and I have to say it’s pretty damn good. This EP has been dubbed “Grungegaze”, a mixture of the popular 90s style Grunge and Shoegazing music. Clocking out at 6:36, with the longest song being 4:54, it’s a short listen, but I highly recommend it.

The EP starts off with the instrumental Romper. The surfing style intro at the beginning is catchy and very drum driven in contrast to the more melodic and guitar based sections later on in the song. A great opening track.

The next song, Bathtub, is much more relaxed, this one including vocals. They start off with an off pitch style of singing, which sounds great, and near the end the singing breaks into a scream, along with a great shift in mood. The lyrics on this track are really strong as well. They’re dark and intriguing, two qualities i love in a bands lyrics.

The best of us never made it to paper
Visions of wolves are drowning in my head
I wake up and wish for grey
The rest of us never made it to later

- Bathtub

Another Sun is more relaxed like the previous and, although the same off-pitch style is applied here, it seems to lack the effect it had in the previous song. He’s singing in a much lower register, and it seems sort of dead and lifeless. The lyrics however are, for the most part, better than Bathtub. The use of the chliched phrase “the song remains the same” is their only draw back.

Overall this is a great EP, with a few minor flaws. It’s interesting, enjoyable, and diverse. Above, if you click the Listen/Download link, you can listen to and purchase the album for however much you want at their Bandcamp. There’s also a free download for all you cheep/broke bastards like me. Follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Soundcloud at their respective links and enjoy!

Discography

"Don't Ted on Me, The New American War EP" is a cassette release that I did as "tedaroski" which was limited to 50 copies that included detailed hand made inserts that I created myself. Each tape came with a unique photo negative that related to the lyrics in some way. This EP is digitally available for free online.

I have a self-titled Dead Turquoise EP available for free online currently, and I plan on recording a full length album in 2013 to be released on vinyl, cassette, and digitally.

Bio

"There also exists as well the concept of living and dead turquoise. Living turquoise has a healthy blue color, whereas dead turquoise has turned either white or black. In the natural aging process of turquoise, exposure to light and body oils darkens the color, eventually turning it black. Tibetans compare this to human aging and death."
