Biography

Longtime veterans of the Capital Region music scene, the members of Dean’s Change Jar have played in more bands and musicals duos than anyone cares to remember. When members of Albany funk rock band Import met up with singer/songwriter Tom Pentkowski, formerly of the Tom & Tony Orchestra, any confusion or second guessing over the lineup was immediately forgotten. Bassist Paul Curtin had already made a name for himself in Import alongside eclectic Belarusian guitarist Boris Rabovsky and jazz trained percussionist Brian O’Quinn. The four came together while opening for a Calvin Klein model (Ben Jelen) some suit had given a record deal to at a club in Clifton Park NY (Northern Lights). At the time, both Import and the Tom & Tony orchestra were still functional separate bands, but that didn’t last long. Tom and the members of Import, who had since lost their singer to restaurant management, joined forces to create Dean’s Change Jar. Within a few weeks they’d put together a unique set of original and cover song’s (Blues Traveler, Chili Peppers, Bob Marley) that can move any crowd. They soon followed up with a stint over at Hoex Studios with producer Dave Reynolds (The Meters, War), where they recorded their debut release, a live EP entitled (surprisingly enough) “The Live Cuts”. With songs like “Western Way” and “Closer” to highlight their songwriting ability, as well as “Fiends” and “Too Bad” to showcase their live potential , Dean’s Change Jar is just looking for an opportunity to get out there live and show everyone what all the buzz is about.
