Marionettes

Written By: Dean Smith

Marionettes
music: Dean Smith, lyrics: Dean Smith

You can see them lined up on the freeway
Pilgrims on parade
They're the early morning Rembrandts
Putting on their face

It's a real devotion
For a grand promotion
And the newsman says there's a traffic mess but the meeting starts at eight

They're the Marionettes

Say it, all the world's a boardroom
Feed the masquerade
Take a polly-wally pig to the luncheon
Projecting foreign trade

It's a real illusion
But you'll need a solution
Once the chairman declares a decline in shares was a minion's small mistake

You're a Marionette
Let us not forget
You're a Marionette
Dressing for success

Use a twenty dollar bill for a bookmark
Auditions at last call
And did you notice Albert Bierstadt
Hanging on the men's room wall

If you can see the vision
We can meet predictions
And your advance is based on where you've placed a tiny white ball

You're a Marionette
Let us not forget
You're a Marionette
Dressing for success

Diamonds and Jeans

Written By: Dean Smith

Diamonds and Jeans
music: Dean Smith, lyrics: Dean Smith
She makes them weak when she walks across the floor
And when she speaks, they know what they've been looking for
When she turns to flash that smile
Lights up the room with a different style
Let's them know she's much more than they've seen before

She's wearing Diamonds and Jeans
She's packing class in those double stitched seams
She's got that special something right in between
In Diamonds and Jeans

She's right at home in the dust out in the fields
Doesn't complain, when there's grease left on the steering wheel
But when the evening rolls around
She makes her way to the finest in town
Cause this backyard girl won't be treated less than a lady

No More

Written By: Dean Smith

No More

I see your face in the window next door
And rooms behind where I don't live anymore
We need to go where there's a world before
No More

It doesn't matter to me where you've been
Your door is open just to let me in
Let others judge us on their way to sin
No More

It's an ancient right of passage
No return on collateral damage
Journals house our big mistakes
But wisdom's always on the last page
Greater minds cannot decide
The universe won't fit inside
A locket holds the things we keep
And try but never reach
No More

There's something hangin' in these city streets
The fog is building just below our knees
It's hard to walk when we can see our feet
No More

It's easy breathing through material eyes
The captain's mate has lost his favorite disguise
He keeps us down like we are barely alive
No More

Ragdoll

Written By: Dean Smith

Rag Doll

Sitting, waiting
Under the windowseat
Nested in ribbons and bows

Shadows of yesterday
When the only thing was wake up and play
Now I'm the only one home

She was the pretty one
Always the lovely one
Each day we'd measure how tall

Lie there beside her
Wipe the tears with my yarn hair
When it looked like it wouldn't work out at all

Puppies and butterflies
Yellow flowers with big black eyes
Everything's right for now

Lives that seem so entwined
Won't withstand the hands of time
It all falls apart somehow

She was the pretty one
Always the lovely one
Each day we'd measure how tall

Lie there beside her
Wipe her tears with my yarn hair
When it looked like it wouldn't work out at all

She was the pretty one
Thinks he's the only one
Suddenly it doesn't work out at all

Stitched arms and heart to mend
I'll be there to pick her up again
It's nothing for a little ragdoll

She Said

Written By: Dean Smith

She Said
music: Dean Smith, lyrics: Dean Smith
She said
Things have gotten a little too close for her
I 've gotta leave her some space
Then She said
It hurts to tell me she's not where she wants to be
But loves the way we embrace

I don't want to make her feel uneasy
Cause I'm hangin' around
I'll just let her know I'll be there
When she comes down

We laid
In the grass looking up at the falling rain
On Tuesday afternoon
And she said
She likes the way I take care of her
But we couldn't meet again too soon

I don't understand all of the reasons
Some things are hard to explain
I'll just let her know I'll be there
If things have changed

We made
Plans to wed beneath an island sunset
Where no one knows who we are
And she said
She needed time to sort through all the confusion
Before things got too far

Now I don't know the end to what she's thinking
I wish I could see in her eyes
I'll just let her know I'll be there
When she decides

Understand

Written By: Dean Smith

Understand

It's so hard
Spend your time trying to make everything alright
If we'd just leave it alone
It'll all come home
And shed it's self in new light

I don't know where I am
Each day a different perfect plan
We all have a place to be
You don't have to Understand

I tried so long
To fill the cup for everyone I would meet
But at the end of the day
I'd hope and pray
There'd be a piece of me left for me

I don't know where I am
Each day a different perfect plan
We all have a place to be
You don't have to Understand

I'm letting go
Leaving the things I can't control
I'm moving on
Better to be where I'm feeling strong

I don't know where I'll land
But I couldn't be in better hands
There's someone watching over me
You don't have to Understand

Sometimes
When I feel like it's all going to fall apart
And twisted 'round in my head
I come back instead
And follow what's in my heart

I'm letting go
Leaving the things I can't control
I'm moving on
Better to be where I'm feeling strong

I don't know wher I'll land
But I couldn't be in better hands
There's someone watching over me
You don't have to Understand

Dance With Me Close

Written By: Dean Smith

Dance With Me Close

She was your life
She was everything you ever wanted
Time will slowly heal your soul
It's not enough
Can't you see you need to be with someone
Loneliness will turn a heart to stone

I know that I can't fill her shoes
But I can help you heal the wounds
If you open up and give us this one chance
Lean on me till you are strong
Till you're comfortable where you belong
And bold enough to let go of the past

Dance with me close tonight
There's a place out on the floor for us
Come hold me now
Make me feel like you did before
The moment is ours
If we want it, it's here for us
Take my hand, and let those fears go
For tonite, just Dance With Me Close

She was me
We were everything that love was supposed to be
I wonder (where she is) what she's doing now
Deep down inside
All the simple little things that I left behind
Are passing through my mind like summer clouds

I know that I can't fill her shoes
With someone different, someone new
But it hurts too much to let those feelings show
You know I'm just a simple man
I can't promise I can love again
So close your eyes and take this real slow

Dance with me close tonight
There's a place out on the floor for us
Come hold me now
Make me feel like I did before
The moment is ours
If we want it, it's here for us
Take my hand and let those fears go
For tonight, just Dance With Me Close

This Apple Tree

Written By: Dean Smith

This Apple Tree

Sometime in my life
When I was rather small
My teacher brought me to this spot
He stood so big and tall
Reached up and broke a piece of limb
And taught me how to be
Some things I thought I'd never learn
Down by this apple tree

Then sometime in my life
When I was smart as all
I led a young lady to this spot
And we began to scrawl
This heart with our initials in
For all the world to see
And something magic happened here
Down by this apple tree

Then sometime in my life
With blessings from grandpa
The preacher met us on this spot
And bound us by God's law
We thought it would be easy
But at times we'd disagree
Somehow things would work out right
Down by this apple tree

There's nothing in those books at school
I could understand
Prepared me for what happened when
You wore gold wedding bands
Our love alone would keep us strong
If we worked hand in hand
Like the roots beneath this ragged bark
Make sure that this tree stands

Sometime in my life
When I'm old and can't recall
Once branches that stood stormy nights
Get weak and start to fall
Set my grandchildren on this stump
Up high so they can see
And tell them something happened here
By this old apple tree
Yes, tell them something happened here
By this old apple tree
