"Philly Local Philes: Dear Althea’s “Oh Today” 2/23/2012"

Dear Althea, a fantastic new Philly foursome that evokes post-riot grrl touchstones like Veruca Salt, 80s punk frontrunners like The Plasmatics, and going way back, foundational acts like The Cramps and Screaming Lord Sutch – some of the people who first made rock n roll freaky. In today’s Philly Local Phile, we dig into their song “Oh Today” – give it a listen or download it below - WXPN - The Key

"Concert Previews"

The Philadelphia Inquirer recently described Dear Althea as “noisy garage-rock abandon with everything pushed into the red; …the trio contrasts it with moments of stripped-down tension.”

Bio

Taking a stylistic nod from Shirley Manson while channeling the attitude of the Riot Grrl movement, Dear Althea effuses haunting and emotionally charged lyrics and melodies; a perfect match to the manic driven riffs inspired by the Who and Veruca Salt. Likened as a cross between indie rock legends Sonic Youth and the Breeders, Dear Althea creates a girl-centric version of contemporary punk rock. A chance meeting at a small town open mic night between Ashley Wildes and Dean DeCampli in the Fall of 2007, led to a late night coffee fueled discussion of all things indie music. A song writing partnership was formed that night and a band practice date was set. After a couple line up changes Ashley and Dean forged ahead with the line-up consisting of two guitars and drums, a la Sleater Kinney. In 2012, they began collaborating with bassist Lisa Gaub and released their first EP "Louder, Faster, Female". Drummer Jessica Martinez makes her debut with the band in December, 2013.

Derived from the 17th century English poem “to Althea from Prison” quote: “Stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage” Dear Althea does not want to confine itself to a particular structure or genre but stretch the limits of their imagination lyrically and musically while often paradoxically cramming their creations into 3 minute radio friendly riotous pop songs.
