BIOGRAPHY
Singer-songwriter, just named as a top ten finalist in the Tucson Folk Festival Songwriting Competition, to be held April 30, 2011. Originally from the Louisiana swamps and influenced by their folk-country-blues traditions, Debbie’s songs marry tradition with modern day personal and political life. She is fairly recent to the music scene, having spent her twenties running an organic cattle ranch in Arizona. The music found her in the long nights waiting for heifers to give birth and the equally long days riding the range to check cattle. Her tunes range thematically from dark, lonely landscapes reminiscent of a Cormac McCarthy novel to funnier, or at least sarcastic takes on this crazy experiment we call modern day life. The Americana Gazette recently said, "Hawkins, who recently moved to Nashville, has established herself in a short amount of time as one of the city's most poetic writers." --Frye Gaillard Feb/Mar 2011
