An eclectic vocalist and persona, deborah jones has been described as “a little bit of Ella.....a little bit of Piaf”. Thus, it would follow that her songwriting and performance would reflect as such.
“I’ve always been that square peg in a round hole” “That actually makes it easy to be myself musically”, says jones “I’m not what people expect”.
After working as a studio musician for many years and lending her considerable talents to others, jones decided to record her own work and bring to life the music she envisions.
Her forthcoming album on SonicUnderground.com is a blend of smooth jazz and bossa nova mix. jones, working together with the talents of co-producers Gian DiMauro (Gearhead Freaks), and Marci Geller, also recruited studio musicians Bill McCrossen (Little Bill, Nickolodeon Network), brothers Brian Dunne (Earth, Wind & Fire/Amanda Marshall), Kevin Dunne (Vanessa Williams/Ricky Martin), Anthony Pomes (Gearhead Freaks/Marci Geller), and John Tabacco (Nigey Lennon) for her project.
The flavour of the album takes you from the contemporary jazz cut “You Can Have It” with it’s hopeful scat lyrics, to the modern clean bossa “All The Comforts of Home”. There is the moving piano/vocal piece “Crayola Blue”, which speaks of love before it’s arrival, and the classic, poignantly sung bossa ballad “O Natal”, which was debuted on Oprah Winfrey’s Oxygen Network and News 12 Long Island as part of a feature story.
deborah’s love for Brazilian music led her to also include on her album the beautiful works of Antonio Carlos Jobim, sung in Portugese, and a childhood favorite called “For Me”, originally recorded by Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66.
“It’s all about the music” says deborah, “The things I grew up with are just as much a part of me as my own songs......this will always be”.
deborah also tours nationally as an opening act and backup vocalist/keyboardist for vocalist Mercedes Hall, and has given performances for WHRL Albany, Smooth Jazz, WJZI Milwaukee, Smooth Jazz, and Sunny 93.3, Raleigh NC, AC.
