Deborah Levoy possesses a riveting stage presence that is as irresistible as her luscious voice. She radiates intelligence and a bare-bones intimacy. Her award-winning songs are always stirring and sometimes disturbing, drawing her audience into the lives of ordinary people: a homeless Vietnam vet, a trapeze artist who's falling in love, a woman who murders her abusive boyfriend, and a lonely bride. Levoy has performed solo throughout the West coast and New England. She has recorded two acoustic albums, "You Are All of These" and "Hungry City". She has recently expanded into edgier territory, recording 10 new songs with her band, on her latest album "Something Sacred".
"Levoy cleans up at nearly every contest she's entered, and for good reason. She has a strong, emotive voice, crisp guitar accompaniment, and an eye and ear for taking everyday life situations and creating high drama in song form," writes The East Bay Express (Oakland, CA). "God Watch My Back," Levoys raw and rootsy ballad of a woman forced to defend herself against an abusive lover struck a chord with Lilith Fair fans to garner the most votes in the 1999 Lilith Fair National Online Talent Search. Deborah's award-winning song, "Maria" was featured on NYC's Fast Folk Compilation (known for showcasing rising talent including Shawn Colvin and Suzanne Vega).
Deborah's been invited to perform at the premier showcases in Los Angeles: ASCAP's "Quiet on the Set" and The National Academy of Songwriters' "Acoustic Underground". She's performed at some of the nations' most prestigious music festivals and listening venues (Great American Music Hall, High Sierra Music Festival, Iron Horse Music Hall, Kerrville Folk Festival). She was invited to showcase with her band at the EAT'M Conference in Las Vegas and at the Rockrgrl Conference in Seattle.
In her childhood home of New Jersey Levoy absorbed the diverse influences of Joan Armatrading, Paul Simon, Billie Holiday, Joni Mitchell, Billy Cobham, and Sting. She went on to sing in a vocal jazz ensemble, a jazz duo, and a world-beat band during her collegiate years in western Massachusetts. And then she took it up solo, fusing her eclectic tastes into a unique one-woman show that is "exceptional, resonant, and passionate," according to the SF Weekly (San Francisco). She now performs both solo and with her band.
