BandPopSinger/Songwriter

A mixture of "Cause" and "Just Because" music. Songs include those for autism (Voice for Sam), cancer survival (Each Moment We're Alive), balanced with love songs (To Find You Now), & fun songs (Carried Away). A seasoned singer/songwriter, I target the mature audience sparked by passion and purpose

Biography

I'm a singer-songwriter, originally from New York City and now living in Connecticut. One of my claims to fame is that I was the lead singer for the Rolling Stone Magazine house band in 1979. I've been singing for as long as I can remember. I still love to perform, but songwriting is my passion now. My first CD, "A Spirited Mother", started as a collection of lullabies and became my effort to capture the feeling of authenticity for my daughter.

My new CD has been described as mixture of "Cause" and "Just Because" music. Fun love songs mixed with songs about autism, adoption, and surviving cancer. It's a journey that has aimed for the higher ground, but which has sometimes run me through the weeds. I've struggled to be faithful to what is True, even when the light of consciousness flashes painfully bright.

"In Broad Daylight" was released in August 2008.

Moving on

Written By: Debra Alt

When I think of leaving him, it gives my heart a sudden chill
You see I’ve traveled down this road before
We’ve said all that there is to say, our hopes have long since sailed away
Now I’m back right where I started from

Moving on is the way it has to be, and this time I won’t be turning around
For the times we called the best and the pain of all the rest, I’m just moving on

I faced my fear and stood alone, I watered faith that turned to stone
I found the strength to ask for what I wanted
The questions weighted me down so far, the answers lit my sky with stars
Now I know just where I’m going

Moving on yet another time, to a place I wish I’d seen long before
Though the grass may not be greener, I know the air is cleaner there, I’m moving on

Bridge:
Things may never be exactly how I planned them
Without a map I traveled with my heart
I learned a little more each step along the way
As I embraced each brand new start

I’m packing for the long haul now, I made myself a solemn vow
This time I’m bound to reap the seeds of reason
I’ve heard the message loud and clear, there’s no way to survive the fear,
This is my finest season

Moving on I can see beyond to a place my spirit longs to be free
Where the past can be forgiven and I seize each day of living and moving on…
I’m just moving on…
I’ll be moving on…
Moving on

Looking for a Conscious Cowboy

Written By: Debra Alt

The lady is a wildflower, sweeter than a moment in June
Her past may cast a shadow, but only if you find it too soon
She’s paved so many roads on the way to her heart
She even has a picture of how love ought to start
It’s clear to all that know her there’s just one missing part
She’s looking for a conscious cowboy

She’s right at home in Montana, and raised a child all on her own
She knows the art of healing, from secrets of the earth she has sown
She’ll spot him as he’s jumping from his saddle to rest
She’ll catch him as he’s falling form an old lover’s nest
She’ll know him when he starts to feel he’s looking his best
She’s looking for a conscious cowboy

She looking for a conscious cowboy, he doesn’t need to wear the hat
She’s just aching for the chance for authentic romance
She’s looking for a conscious cowboy

She’s ready for a real man, someone who can stand on his own
Who can speak with truth and laughter and cherish time being alone
He’s got to care about the land and be playing his part
In improving on our world and be gentle of heart
She’s made the space and time so she’s ready to start looking for a conscious cowboy

She looking for a conscious cowboy, with or without the hat
She’s reaching out her hand for new western romance
She’s looking for a conscious cowboy

Bridge:
A conscious cowboy keeps on growing, always one to speak his heart
A conscious cowboy’s love is flowing, just waiting for the right woman’s spark

She looking for a conscious cowboy, she can take or leave the hat
She’s just aching for the chance for authentic romance
She’s so ready for the dance of some cowboy romance
She’s looking for a conscious, waiting for a conscious, on to find her conscious cowboy

One Heart at a Time

Written By: Debra Alt

One Heart at a Time
Lyrics by D. Alt, Music by Debra Alt & Paul Scialabba ©2001 Servethrusong Publishing (ASCAP)

I sit upon your bed and search your face for what you need to hear
what you could somehow understand, for what might take away some of your fear
I listen to your questions as I struggle for an answer
that would satisfy a growing mind

And what to say of war and of the evil that’s behind it all
how could our God have let us down does he ever hear us in the times we call
we will not be defeated I believe the good is stronger
Now we must move on and find a way to make things different

One heart at a time, something you can understand
One heart at a time, it’s in each and all our hands
We get closer everytime we shed some light to find
One heart at a time

We have to take the time to teach each other to get beyond despair
to know that what is wrong can change,& we’ll find the strength uniting those who care
And in each silent moment where the pain can be forsaken
we can learn to see a world of peace by reaching out to

One heart at a time, looking deep into the eyes
One heart at a time, it may come as no surprise
that behind the bitter walls, a voice of healing calls to
One Heart at a time

Bridge –
Go on and paint a picture, of a world that lives in freedom
and see it through the eyes of one who knows
We can turn around the darkness, you can help create the future
With real love, the light around us grows

One heart at a time, the answers can be found
One heart at a time, listen closely, to the sound
of the cries and hopes we share, to connect us through the years
One heart at a time, one heart at a time, do it one heart at a time …

Born of Light

Written By: Debra Alt

“Born of Light”

A young girl learns to tie her shoes without a guiding hand
She walks into a kitchen like an empty promised land
Another hungry morning, with only fear to keep her strong
She fights the tears of longing for a mother long since gone

She hugs her books in tightly with a coat that’s worn and old
Then gently pulls the door behind a man who’s still out cold
Breathing in the air of freedom, she prays no one will see
The bruises he delivered when he tucked her into sleep

CHORUS – A child is born of light, each child has the right
To be brought from their darkness and fright, they must survive,
For each child is born of light

Walking home the long way for reasons she can’t name
She thinks about the night ahead and how she wishes things could change
Then spotted waiting on her stairway, someone who’s talked about a plan
Is now promising to help her as she reaches out her hand

CHORUS - Each child is born of light, whenever we find
Our children wounded inside, for them we must fight
For each child is born of light

BRIDGE – We’ll build a shelter where hope can be restored,
A new life starts with just one open door

CHORUS - A child is born of light, each child that we find
In need of protection and pride, can’t be denied
For each child is born of light - REPEAT 1st Chorus

Voice for Sam

VOICE FOR SAM
Written by Debra L. Alt ©2007

How can I tell you that I want to go now when I cannot find the words
The other kids are playing around me, I’m alone & something hurts
I’m a boy who’s feeling scared of all the noises in my head
I can hear you but I know you don’t hear me

Mom is always so creative finding new things we can try
Dad comes home each nite with hope, and fearful eyes he tries to hide
And my brother’s on the run, I know it can’t be too much fun
It’s not easy living with a boy like me

There’s a voice for Sam, and all the others like him
We need to understand
It’s just who he is, he needs us to find a way in

I know you’re trying and I feel all the love, but I still need to ask for more
When you see me spinning, and I’m jumping, to a rhythm all my own
Please be patient as you can, and accept me as I am
I’m still changing, so don’t give up on me

Here’s a voice for Sam, and so many others like him
We’ve gotta do all that we can
He needs us to know, somehow let it show, we’re there for him
BRIDGE –
The ways of those like Sam, are full of mystery
Let’s unlock the gates of silence,
Find a way to set these children free

Be a voice for Sam, and too many more just like him
Try to understand
It’s just where he is, he needs us to find a way in

Be a voice for Sam (and all the others like me)
Be a voice for Sam (it’s just who I am)
Be a voice for Sam (keep looking to find a way in)
Be a voice for Sam (don’t give up on me)
Be a voice for Sam

The Love and Long Run

Written By: Debra Alt

The Love and Long Run
Lyrics by D. Alt, Music by D. Alt & P. Scialabba ©2004 Servethrusong Publishing(ASCAP)
What she saw in him was an answer
He found himself in her eyes
Too young to know any better
They launched and promised their lives

With passion soon there were children
Tough times were not far behind
It must be the stuff they were made of
That kept all those big dreams alive

When you know that what you have is all you need
And the innocence of youth can plant the seed
With some luck and many prayers and a vision you can share
It can lead you through the love and the long run

As they toast to the years spent together
With the loved ones they’ve gathered tonight
And to all they have reached and have given
Because of a love that survived

When you know that what you have is all you need
And the innocence of youth helps to believe
With some luck and many prayers, and a vision you can share
It can lead you to the love and the long run

Bridge For how many can this song be sung, so few have made it
through, the love and long run

When you know that what you have is all you need
then the grace of what you know can set you free
with some luck and many prayers, and a vision you can share
It can lead to the love,
Bring you to the love,
May it carry you through love and the long, long, run

Wild and Sweet

Written By: Debra Alt and Steve Lazrove

Kissing in the kitchen, laughing in your arms
What a fine surprise this turned out to be
Didn’t have an inkling, never had a prayer
That tonight would end with you loving me

Wild and sweet
I’m spinning swaying slowly to forever songs with you
Wild and sweet
Oh baby it’s so crazy to fall so in love with you

I’ve been holding out for someone reckless and in tune
I want so much to believe this is real
You fill me up with pleasure, you play me like a song
All I know is how you make me feel

Wild and sweet
Lives entwined together with one heartbeat loud and true
Wild and sweet
I’m hearing brand new music that I can’t stop dancing to

Thrill me with devotion, carry me away
I’m coming to you baby, won’t you carry me away

Lying by the fire, watching embers die
There’s only so much love for one night
We’ll reach again tomorrow for the tenderness and flames
To have it be this way and know that it’s right

Wild and sweet
I want to stay beside you for eternity, I do
Wild and sweet oh baby it’s so crazy I am so in love with you

Wild and sweet
Wild and sweet
Wild and sweet

Each Moment We're Alive

Written By: Debra Alt and Jeff Fuller

She doesn’t want your sympathy
Or anything that makes her feel a victim
He hears they’re closer to a cure each day
But how his body turns away to betray him
What they really want is for you to know
Just what it is when their story’s told that sustains them
It’s a strength that somehow makes its way
Through all the words and the simple faith that they’ll make it

I say cancer cannot cripple love
Or shatter hope or be anything but angry
When you work so hard to stay alive
You need a reason pushing you to strive to keep going
It’s a message, it’s a wakeup call
It’s a plea to understand it all and find meaning
For the scary rollercoaster ride
And the hope that never leaves my side for long

In each moment we’re alive
With every chance we let slip by
There’s something to remind us why we’re here
In each moment we’re alive
In what it takes to have survived
The beauty of our presence is so clear

I’m counting off my milestones
And count on friends and loved ones to stick by me
I’ll keep holding on to miracles
Or better still the strength of will to beat this
I can’t believe I went through all this pain
To say that it’s been all in vain, it’s changed me
Now I spread the word of what I know
What it means to take it slow and grateful

For each moment we’re alive
For every breath, with every sigh
How the world will be so different from now on
In each moment we’re alive
I want to fill my heart’s desire
Toss caution to the wind and reach beyond

In each moment we’re alive
We follow joy, we carry pride
Empowered to be all we’re meant to be
In each moment we’re alive
From everything that can inspire
Entrust that life will give us what we need
In each moment we’re alive ….

Carried Away

Written By: Debra Alt, Steve Lazrove, & Chip Degaard

I was curled up on the couch and I was feelin' fine
At a late nite party with a friend of mine
From the corner of my eye I caught your midnight grin
I felt my heart crack open and you slipped right in

When you come up close beside me I could lose control.
But something keeps on telling me to take a hold
The memory of that must you carried in the room,
Can’t stand it, can’t stop it, gotta take control

CHORUS Carried away, I think I’m getting carried away
I watch my heart just sail away
When I see I’m getting carried away

Honey being with you lit a spark so deep in me
That I’m feelin burning passion of the third degree
I wanna keep my cool but it’s a little late
I’d like to keep you guessing but I just can’t wait

So I start telling you a story of some time ago
And I’m giving out the details you don’t need to know
Something in the telling just comes over me
I say too much, try too hard, gotta get a grip

CHORUS Carried away, oh no I'm getting carried away again
There’s nothing left to do or say
When I know I'm getting carried away

BRIDGE-I can't believe I'm goin' down this road of no return
I don't know how I end up here, again and again
Must be those demons dancin cartwheels in my head once more
Should I go here, should I stop there, or should I stay

CHORUS Carried away, I'm always getting carried away
I know there'll be a price to pay
When I let myself get carried away

Carried away, let's you and I get carried away
Is there really any other way
Then to live a life that's carried away

How I Wish You Could See

HOW I WISH THAT YOU COULD SEE
Written by Debra L. Alt ©2008 Servethrusong (ASCAP)

My pregnant body showed its age
As I wrote to you on flowered pages
Long after you were born you nursed
On top of pillows you quenched your thirst
Content to know that just to be
Was just enough to fill your needs
If only that was something you could see

How I wish that you could see how our life flowed so peacefully
How I wish that you could see the way I held you sacredly

We tore your home in half and how I tried
To grow a brand new one together
Went everywhere with you in tow
A little girl that could never know
How I smiled along with the other moms
In a world I never did belong
If only that was something you could see

How I wish that you could see how I stroked you while asleep
How I wish that you could see the dreams I held for you and me

We grew so far apart we’re ripping at the seams
Traded all our time for cyber pages
You left me for a house where the grass looked green
Helped you take away all the memories
Nights I roam in your room with empty shelves
Stare at the walls for what they might tell
If only that was something you could see

How I wish that you could see the things you want won’t fill your needs
How I wish that you could see what your closed heart has done to me

BRIDGE If only you could feel the connection between your words and what they do
How I wish that you could take in my affection & know how much there is to lose

Searched so long to find you in the dark
Reached for you across some far-gone distance
You looked through me with vacant eyes
I stopped trying to compromise
Walked on eggshells ‘til I found a way
To heal your life and keep you safe
If only that was something you could see

How I wish that you could see the source of happiness you seek
How I wish that you could see what’s blind to you but clear to me

How I wish that you could see just how different life could be
How I wish that you could see the love for you that lives in me

How I want for you, how I long for you
How I wish that you could see

More Than Remember (The MADD Song)

Written By: Debra Alt and Jeff Fuller

More Than Remember written for M.A.D.D. (Mothers Against Drunk Driving)
Written by Debra L. Alt & Jeff Fuller ©2008 Servethrusong (ASCAP)

He was a first son, a brother and a best friend
He always laughed and played so hard
So young we found each other, and his blue eyes held my secrets
A first and last sweetheart
His life had only just begun, a tender man just twenty-one
The vibrant life we’d always known, was soon to come undone

Three AM one morning, on a still night in December
A knock pierced all the sleepless sounds
A sergeant told the story, that would soon became my terror
Then the strength that’s always held me, let me down
I couldn’t grasp what I was told, a crash, a car that lost control
How would I ever be consoled, my heart will not let go

More than remember, I’ll keep him alive
His memory’s forever, love that won’t die
More than remember, finding the ways
To honor our loved ones, make the roads safe
And more than remember

Planting trees and wearing ribbons, placing wreaths along the highway
All we can do to help the spirit thrive
In sorrow stand together, share our strengths with one another
So we can see the ways we do survive
I hope someday again I’ll find, the light in me that used to shine
I miss your smile, your hand in mine, the one that’s left behind

More than remember, keep you alive
Memories forever, love that won’t die
More than remember, we’ll never abide
Careless offenders, guilty of crimes
We’ll more than remember

More than remember, keep them alive
Memories forever, love that won’t die
More than remember, a tribute worthwhile
A message to all, to not drink and drive
Do more than remember
