Bio

Dechen was born in 1959 in Kathmandu, where her parents had found refuge during their flight from Tibet. Although
Switzerland was to become her new home, she never forgot her roots, which she has tended since her childhood. As a
girl she loved singing Tibetan folksongs with her mother, and to this day is able to infuse her music with the calm and
security she thus imbibed. Dechen, who lives on the Lake of Zurich, is married to Tibetan naturopath Dr Kalsang Shak,
with whom she has two grown daughters.
Dechen’s first album, «Dewa Che, Universal Healing Power», appeared in 1999. It was a surprise success and was subsequently
honoured with Switzerland’s Gold Record. Seven more albums were to follow.
In the documentary Daheim in zwei Welten (At home in two worlds), produced in 2006 by Swiss Television SF, made the
petite woman with the pure voice known to a broad public. It also publicized the various benevolent projects Dechen
has actively supported for years, together with her two sisters and the Friends of the Tsedön Clinic Association.
In addition to her other activities, Dechen has in recent years sung many times for His Holiness the Dalai Lama and provided
musical support for Isabella Rosselini in her performances of a work by Bob Wilson in Istanbul, Porto and Santiago
de Compostela, and can be heard on the soundtrack of Little Buddha, Bernardo Bertolucci’s moving hit film, which was
produced by legendary Ryuichi Sakamoto.
A special triumph came in 2009 with BEYOND, on which Dechen is joined by Tina Turner and Regula Curti. The CD, very
well received by the media, went platinum in Switzerland.
Thanks to the success of BEYOND and with the help of her Dewa Che Foundation, Dechen was able to establish a sewing
school during her last trip to Tibet in July of 2010 and thus create employment for ten young people.
The CD “Jewel” was released in 2010 and could continue the great success of «BEYOND». The Swiss producer Helge Van
Dyk masterfully embedded the old mantra melodies in his own unique compositions to create a modern, universally
sound which now reached an audience which didn’t had an access to this “mantra-world”.
October ’11 was the release of a new album of the dream-team Tina Turner, Regula Curti & Dechen Shak-Dagsay: «Children
Beyond». 30 kids, aged 6 to 16, are singing various prayers with the ladies. TV-Shows in Switzerland and Germany
have caused attention.
13h Feb. 2012 Dechen following the invitation of Philip Glass himself to play at Carnegy Hall in New York. Starting in
March, various concerts all over Switzerland and Mid-Europe and a new CD will follow.
EPILOGUE
“I am very happy and grateful that I have been able to touch the hearts of so many people with my music, and lead them
back to their very own source of love and empathy.”
