Bio
DECOTEAU BLACK is a grooving and eclectic
Milwaukee-based indie-soul band founded in 2013 by guitarist and vocalist
Decoteau Irby, bassist James Murrell, and drummer John Laws. The three
musicians met at a music jam hosted by James and an immediate musical kinship
formed. Singer-songwriter Decoteau Irbys dark and searching songs are set to
soul-, funk- and jazz-inflected indie-rock sounds. Inspiration for Decoteau Black: Hendrix, Wes Montgomery, Marvin Gaye, Nina
Simone, Stevie Wonder, Wu Tang Clan, Goodie M.O.B., Outkast, and on and on... Decoteau Black draws on a vast
storehouse of Decoteaus original songs, including recordings from his 2012
release A Contagious Spring, re-casting the works into a live sound driven by
James punching bass and Johns funky drums.
