DBS started in 1998 with the classic Georgia rock line up of keys, dual guitars, and percussive rhythm section. The band has evolved through the years, and with the addition of Matt Lynn (extraordinary lead guitarist who has been called "the next Derek Trucks" and "Warren Haynes meets Jerry Garcia"), DBS has become one of the most intense and funky live acts on the jam circuit today. What sets them apart from the typical "jambands" out there is their unique, strong songwriting -- steeped in the southern roots of blues and funk, but with a distinct West coast infusion of melody and psychedelia. The songs move you, and blend seamlessly into each other with intense, tasty jams that are never repetetive, and always deep in the groove.
DBS is legendary in the Atlanta region for their notorious, raging "Farm Parties" that built them a loyal grassroots fanbase that follow them today. The line up has evolved, but they still practice out at the farm, and the common goal has never changed: to lay down quality music that takes people higher, and have a really good time doing it.
Deep Blue Sun is an intense, incendiary blend of original melodic rock, funk, improv, and southern-fried soul. More than a "jam band", their distinctive sound comes from solid songwriting, harmonies and tasty solos that draw on a wide range of musical influences from New Orleans funk, 70s groove, jazz, classic rock to bluegrass and more. DBS plays a wide variety of originals and deep, groove-based covers designed to get people up and moving. The band keeps it fresh by varying the set list, bringing in cool guest musicians, and changing up the transitions and arrangements..sometimes on the spur of the moment. It's never predictable, but it's always a party.
DBS can be found throughout the southeast playing major music festivals, clubs, pubs, farm parties, private events, occasional undisclosed locations, and everywhere in between. The band plays festivals featuring the top musicians in the scene today, including Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Karl Denson, Ivan Neville, The Radiators, and many many more.
Deep Blue Sun has played live on Atlanta Radio Z-93, and tracks from "Will To Fly" have been spun on independent/locals programs in major markets including Atlanta, Chattanooga, Asheville and Auburn.
