In a musical landscape where blogs and Hype Machine dictate much early adoption, it’s become increasingly common to be introduced to producer or musician through remixes. So it goes with New York producer deepspace, an anonymous newcomer (surprise!) who puts sparse, moody spins on songs by up-and-coming Brooklyn counterparts Tei Shi and Yellerkin. deepspace turns the former’s “Sickasfuck” into a sort of icy, bizarro “Royals,” straight-ahead and skeletal until an excellent synthesizer breakdown. The latter band’s “Vines” gets a slightly different treatment, pretty and distant, emphasizing a certain sadness in singer Adrian Galvin’s voice.

Listen to both remixes below and, if you’re in New York, check out Tei Shi and Yellerkin at The Studio at Webster Hall next Wednesday April 30th. - Pidgeons and Planes

"Sunday Jam: Tei Shi’s Sickasfuck (deepspace remix)"

Tei Shi (aka Valerie Teicher) is a Brooklyn-based musician making self-professed mermaid music. deepspace‘s remix of Sickasfuck is way too racy to play on CFMU, but I like its dense beat and layered, looped vocals and the fact that the unsteady beat turns it into glitchy Dirty Projectors kin. Her stage name comes from a riff off Jay-Z’s alterego, but suits her quite well – mysterious and chopped. Sickasfuck comes off her 2013 EP Saudade (stream & download on Soundcloud here). I love Nevermind The End and Nature vs Nurture. - Music Between Friends

"Tei Shi and Yellerkin get remixed by NYC producer deepspace"

Both Tei Shi and Yellerkin were brought up in much of the same scene, being from Brooklyn and having their songs adored by the HypeMachine crowd. New York City producer deepspace is hiding under the veil of anonymity for now, but he's contributed two brand new remixes of Tei Shi's 'Sickasfuck' and Yellerkin's 'Vines', making each a bit darker and moodier than it was before. 'Sickasfuck' ends up sounding in the same bare-bones vein as Lorde, while 'Vines' has some deeper, more intricate layers added and there's a peculiar emphasis placed on Adrian Galvin's voice, making it seem a bit more melancholy. The two are playing a show together on Wednesday, 30 April at the Studio at Webster Hall, and you can pick up tickets here if you're interested! - The 405

"deepspace - yeahyeahyeah"

Well, we just got an email submission, and I have to say, I really like it. Give it a listen here! - Eskimo Brethren

deepspace EP

Deepspace is a rising producer/songwriter, blending washed out vocals and hip-hop inspired beats over a lush tapestry of sound. Born on planet Earth, and currently residing in Ridgewood, deepspace has been self-described as trying “ recreate a moment that was beautiful to me.” He has been featured on reputable music blogs such as Pigeons and Planes, Music Between Friends, and The 405. One of deepspace’s greatest memories was being described by mixing guru Andrew Sarlo as, “...if Panda Bear, Kendrick Lamar, and Tame Impala got together to write songs for Beyonce.” With the release of a self-titled EP in 2015, this artist is going places and taking all of us with him.
