Still working on that hot first release.

Defendants is a metal/hardcore band based in Memphis, TN, with a desperate, plaintive brand of music characterized by raw screaming, melodic breakdowns, and a dangerous, frantic stage presence. Drawing from bands in the the metal scene such as A Plea For Purging, Take It Back!, As Cities Burn, The Ghost Inside, and I The Breather, their sundry influences lead to a quick jumps between genres that are made consistent and logical by focused songwriting and well-though out transitions.

Defendants have recorded a recent rough demo and are currently writing and rehearsing for an introductory EP and booking for short tour in July, including various dates at Cornerstone Festival in Bushnell, Illnois, and a regional tour through Tennessee, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, they intend to hit the scene hard- it isn’t their first rodeo. Comprised of former members of Die to Yourself and Stories of Shepherds, their standards are high and they know what it takes to achieve success.

Both students at Visible School of Music and Worship Arts in Memphis, TN, Bobby Ross (guitar, clean vocals) and Tyler Payne (drums) started Defendants as an outlet for their love of metal and hardcore music in a dry scene. After making the acquaintance of Josh Owens (lead vocals) and Aaron Stearns (bass) through his songwriting instructor, Bobby attended a Stories of Shepherds concert, starting a relationship with Josh and Aaron which soon led to the inception of Defendants. Writing long distance (Josh and Aaron driving down from Jonesboro, AR), it was a slow start, during which the group had time to focus the vision of the group into a concrete institution- to demonstrate the grace of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, in a real and authentic way, free from the incongruous and sometimes insincere showings of many of the bands they had seen in the scene in recent years.

All college students, Defendants are committed to their music and the scene out of which it grew, and seek to grow as proctors of their genre and the message they seek to convey. Owens screams with grit teeth, “We are destined to fall, but made to rise- oh God, take this life I attempt to drive,” a pained bark at the harsh tensions of attempting to live as an authentic Christian entrenched in a society of materialism and hypocrisy. Their beliefs are the reason for the music they create, as well as the desire to demonstrate to their society and the world that a life of following Christ is not about saying the right things or not cursing or smoking or drinking, but about living a different life that denies the self and seeks to bring praise to and life-change in the name of Jesus Christ.

Entering the studio in the summer and currently writing in a defined direction, and booking during the meantime, Defendants are not content with the state of their faith or their scene and intend to do something about it.
