Do not attempt to adjust the picture.

You are about to experience the awe and mystery that reaches from the inner mind to the outer limits . . . of Garwood.

But hey, don't let the location fool ya.

Trio of Madness

It's a mad, mad world: Trio of Madness Nick Charles, from left, Liz Gonzalez and Mike Wojik will get far when they play tomorrow's "Outer Planets Arts Festival."

Because tomorrow night, the borough's Crossroads nightclub will host The Outer Planets Arts Festival, an intergalactic fusion of art, music and photography that's the brainchild of musician Mike Wojik.

What began as a video release party for his band, Trio of Madness, morphed into a promotional vehicle for local talent.

"A lot of groups and artists have no idea of how to promote themselves," the 42-year-old Roselle resident explains. "A lot of people end up playing a dozen or so shows per month . . . and they're playing for six people.

"Instead of doing that . . . why not go for quality? Book something a few months in advance, really put some thought into it."

And that's exactly what Wojik, a music-industry veteran, did. It wasn't difficult to find other artists. After all, he was surrounded by them.

"I know almost all of these people individually, personally," says Wojik. "The criteria for choosing them was not only were they the best that I knew of, but they're also good people and very sincere about what they do."

Joining his band on the bill are Burning Up White of East Brunswick and Defenestrate Time of New Brunswick.

"For those who are into musicianship and song craft and intelligence in music with a little sense of humor thrown in, these groups are perfect for that," says Wojik.

In addition to sets by all three bands, the evening will include live painting by Bruce Meyers, gallery exhibits of art by D. Wojciechowski, photography by Home News Tribune photographer Augusto F. Menezes, and feature films by Eric Vitner and Adam Barnick.

All of the aforementioned run in the same circles, Wojik says, "trying to eke out existence as artists . . . You don't lose touch with people who are heading in the same directions."

Trio of Madness will also debut the video -- filmed by Vitner, of Edison -- for their song, "The Drake Equation."

For those of us feeling less than cerebral (especially at the end of a long work week), the Drake equation, explains Wojik, "is used by scientists to mathematically prove that there's intelligent life in the universe."

Judging by the description of Trio of Madness' show -- which includes, according to publicity information, "alien attire" -- it's a subject close to Wojik's heart.

"Hopefully whatever intelligent life is out there has learned to co-exist with itself and each other, and maybe teach our race a few things," he muses.

The Outer Planets Arts Festival, featuring Trio of Madness, Defenestrate Time, Burning Up White, films by Eric Vitner and Adam Barnick, art by Bruce Meyers and D. Wojciechowski, and photos by Augusto F. Menezes, 8 p.m. tomorrow, Crossroads, 78 North Ave., Garwood. $5. (908) 232-5666, www.xxroads.com, www.outerplanetsarts.com
