Dejavu - "Abriendo Caminos"

With members hailing from Venezuela, Peru, Colombia, and the good ol' USA, Columbus band Dejavu is an international melting pot of Latin jams. The different styles and cultures that they grew up with and have been exposed to are evident on their new self-released debut Abriendo Caminos (Opening Paths). Recorded this spring in Lima, Peru, the 13 songs here reveal bits of their various reference points that mix together for an album about Latino brotherhood, international community, and... lots of dancing.

Traditional salsa provides a great deal of their "Latin Fusion Rhythms," but percussionist Tino Casanova ventures into many other territories with his arsenal of tricks, so fans of the Peruvian box, congas, timbales, and bongos are in for a treat. The music is also driven by the bass of Kique Infante (who also sings lead on most tracks), the keyboards of Jason Foster, and the guitar of John Basom (unfortunately, guitarist and cuatro player Victor Zancudo was unable to travel for the recording). The vocals of Infante and Maria Duque are passionate and persuasive, often coaxing the listener to dance and hear their joyful message, even if the listener doesn't speak Spanish. As a band focused on rhythms, Dejavu is best at mid- and up-tempo dance tunes; the ballads here seem to change the band's style for the worse and throw off the album's momentum. Overall, though, Abriendo Caminos is an impressive debut, and a very professional self-produced product (the thick booklet features full lyrics in Spanish and English).

Come hear the songs of Dejavu live on Saturday night, November 11th, at the Columbus Music Hall. Doors open at 9 PM, with face-melting jams to ensue shortly thereafter.
