The phenomenal NYC folk group Della Grove is the latest band to join the CHARGED.fm LIVE ranks! Performing an acoustic version of their beautiful duet “Roads,” the members Joey Vaughn and Claire Cuny were a ray of sunshine emanating from our office. Della Grove, the newly christened band previously known as "Joey Vaughn and Friends" is a hard hitting bluesy rock band, with it's feet firmly planted in it's smokey country roots. The players, featuring Joey Vaughn on guitar, the lovely vocalist, Clarie Cuny, Brian Varneke on secondary guitar and trumpet, Roger Mulligan on bass and KLIB's favorite drummer (and video editor) Chris Rodriguez on drum set, came in for our fifth GHS installment, and sat with us to discuss the band's lineup, sound, writing process, and why Brian's dad was not in charge of picking their band name. Somewhere in the country between and old coffee shop and stolen neon sign from an uptown jazz club, there's a small group of trees known as Della Grove. At the heart of this New York City-based band is American rock music, but the lines between blues and jazz, folk and country are consistently blurred with each track.
Della Grove's conglomeration of roots rock, country, jazz, and a little folk came together with New York native Joey Vaughan's (lead singer/lead guitar) city and country influences, having lived in the city as well as Upstate. Texas born songstress Claire Cuny (lead singer) encourages a more country and folk sound stemming from her southern roots. The smooth and sexy sounds of Brian Varneke (trumpet/rhythm guitar) inspire Della Grove's raunchy jazz feel. Roger Mulligan (bass/vocals) is the heart of Della Grove with his onstage (and off) crowd pleasing sense of humor. Chris Rodriguez (drums) puts it all together with his intricate and inventive drumming. Della Grove currently performs in venues all over NYC/Brooklyn (The Bitter End, Arlene's Grocery, The Rock Shop, The Delancey, etc.) as well as venues in Long Island.
