It’s not often that we review a two year old album here in KyndMusic. Normally, we try to offer pre-release peaks at up-coming albums or at least a glimpse into your favorite bands latest release from the month before. We feel that one of our jobs is to present our readers with the latest news and pioneering music in the jam and indie rock scenes, not some worn-out music you’ve already heard. And that brings us around to Del Mar.
You see, this album was released in May 2003 but, when it comes down to it, you may not have heard it yet. And it certainly isn’t worn out. In fact, this Madison, WI band is made up of true American pioneer sons of the Midwest and delivers their music appropriately.
This interdenominational music fuses together various roots influences to create an animated and contagious music that sits at the crossroads of many a music scene from jam to alt-country to newgrass and so on. If it traveled west in a wagon, you’ll hear it distilled somewhere on this album. And they manage to create this blend with an understated and penetrating style that combines their 8 years of growth and a Fargo-like sensibility.
So whether you’re in Massachusetts, Texas, California, Michigan or somewhere in between, open your door and welcome in these Midwestern troubadours. They may look a little shaggy but they come from good stock and play pure music don'tcha know. - Dave Terpeny

After officially getting started in 1997 at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, del mar has transformed from an eight-piece college "jam" band to a four-piece progressive American roots outfit that has gained the attention of scenesters, critics and music enthusiasts throughout the Midwest.
del mar chums vintage roots rock sounds of yesterday with timeless licks of tomorrow. They combine groove rock, alt-country, funk, electronica, and bluegrass into their feel-good sound. del mar has not forgotten about soulful songwriting and crafts original songs with harmonies that ring in your head and collective grooves that keep your feet moving.
Originally known as el pollo del mar, the band trimmed the name and line-up in 2000 headed up to Madison. del mar has developed a growing fan base in both Madison and Milwaukee and has used it as a springboard to other major markets in the region. Recently they have shared the stage with acts such as Keller Williams, Jazz Mandoline Project, Umphrey’s McGee, MOFRO, ekoostic hookah, John Browns Body, Strangefolk, Tea Leaf Green, Jennifer Hartswick Band and many others.
