"Traditional Flavors of Havana Made New"

On Thursdays and Sundays, a guitarist, Alex Fernandez Fox, and different accompanists play the kind of Cuban music that can become an obsession. The music is one more reason that, after an evening here, you don’t feel you’ve been to a restaurant. You feel as if you’ve been to a party. - The New York Times

"Guateke Cubano featuring David Oquendo y Habana Tres, Delexilio & Alex Fernandez-Fox"

On Friday night, 92YTribeca and trovador Roberto Poveda hosted a celebration in honor of the birth of Cuban writer and patriot José Martí. Dubbed Guateke Cubano - which translates roughly as "Cuban Celebration" - the showcase featured singer/songwriter Alex Fernandez-Fox, the modern funk/rock/son group Delexilio, and Latin jazz greats David Oquendo y Habana Tres.

The musical journey began with Fernandez-Fox’s Cuban-inspired folk music, with harmonized vocals and tres over subtle Latin beats. Noting that “great poetry and great art is universal,” Fernandez-Fox filled the room with a warmth that lasted throughout the night. The lively “El Niño Tiene Clave,” based on the notion that Cuban children "are born with a Rumba heartbeat," left the crowd energized and asking for more. - Feast of Music

Bio

Alex Fernandez Fox is a Cuban-American independent artist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, singer and songwriter. His music resists easy categorization, drawing freely from traditional Cuban music, American folk, rock, jazz, and other diverse influences all of which find a place in his English and Spanish language compositions. Alex regularly performs on acoustic and electric guitars as well as the Cuban tres, a steel-stringed folk guitar which features prominently in traditional Cuban son music.

As a musician and musical director he has been part of ensembles in both Latin and non-Latin genres and has performed at festivals and local music venues throughout North America and in Europe. He plays extensively in the New York metro area and has performed with various groups at local venues such as Lincoln Centers Midsummer Nights Swing, Town Hall, CUNY Graduate Centers Elebash Recital Hall, NYUs Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, the Highline Ballroom and numerous others.

Alex works as a band leader, session musician and guitar instructor. He graduated from Duke University, where he played piano in the Duke Jazz Ensemble, and earned a degree in law from Georgetown University. He also studied classical guitar at the Mannes College of Music and popular guitar and percussion at the National Arts School (ENA) in Havana, Cuba.

"Uno," an eclectic collection of original songs, is Alex's first release as a solo artist. The tracks are as varied as his playing and listening experiences, often blurring the line between Latin, rock, funk and other genres. Alexs band, del Zorro, takes its name from the Spanish word for "fox" and shares its name with his music publishing company, del Zorro Records.
