"Carrying a Family Dream"

Two brothers are working to turn their hobby into a full-time job. Darnaye Hines, 28, and his brother Darnelle, 33, have spent their free time for the past eight months producing a hip-hop CD from the studio they have built in the basement of their parents' Fort Washington home. The brothers are like many aspiring musicians. They work full time and make music when they can, but their work earned them a Wammie nomination from the Washington Area Music Association last year. Darnaye is an engineer and research assistant for the Prince George's County government. Darnelle is a Unix systems administrator at Lockheed Martin. "Music has always been a part of our life -- all the way from our great-grandfather, who was in the Lionel Hampton Band, to our grandfather, who was a jazz collector," Darnaye said. "Our father was a local DJ." The Hines brothers began putting together their studio in 1998 and say they will begin touring soon. Commercials for their debut CD -- "Diverse" -- will soon run on local VH1 and BET channels. "We've come a long way," Darnelle said. - PG Extra Washington Post

"It's Time To Change The Game"

In a city dominated by the live sound of Go-Go, D en'D proves that hip hop lives in DC too. These brothers from the same mother are destined to show you what happens when DC swagger puts its touch on Hip Hop music. - Kapital Magazine

"Fashionably Hip to the Beat in Adams Morgan"

"You can mingle and make friends, and you never know who's gonna fall through," says Darnelle Hines, a computer programmer who spends his evenings and weekends producing music and publishing an indie hip-hop magazine called the Kapital. He finds time to visit Commonwealth about three times a week: to browse, to shop, to chat people up. "We can all talk about music here. It's just a good place to be." - Washington Post
