"cd review for "to jimmy with love""

"There is probably a Denise Hradecky in every town across the U.S. — a sweet-voiced lyrical poet who sets her words to the gentle strum of an acoustic guitar. When the stars align, women like Denise Hradecky find themselves with a major label recording contract shoved under their noses. Jewel, Lisa Loeb, Juliana Hatfield — they’ve all been in the right place at the right time. But for every female artist that gets the opportunity to shine, there are dozens and dozens whose biggest gig will be playing in front of the rush hour commute at Starbucks. And perhaps that says something. Perhaps that says that if you enjoy really, really good singer/songwriters you’d be better off hanging out in coffee shops than attending ho-hum concerts in big venues. Listening to Denise Hradecky’s short and sweet 5-song EP To Jimmy With Love I can’t help but envision Sarah McLachlin resurrecting the Lilith Fair tour for the sole purpose of showcasing Hradecky’s wonderful, if not humble, talents. The songs are beautiful glimpses into the mind of a young woman coming of age. Hradecky sings about her head being in the clouds ("Underground"), about a lover who can’t make up his/her mind ("What?"), and about being in a deep funk ("Brain Clog"). The most animated song on the EP is "Uh-Oh" which moves at a slightly quicker pace than the rest of the songs and has two whispery vocals tracks placed atop each other, one in each channel so that it sounds like Hradecky is singing into one ear while her twin is singing into your other ear. There is also some mild keyboard ornamentation added that adds spice to the song. A talent like this can’t help getting noticed and I’d venture to say that one of these days, as Hradecky is putting away her acoustic guitar following a gig at a corner coffee shop, some major label A&R guy is going to approach her, business card in hand and say, "Give me a call. I can make you huge." And, if this EP is any indication of Hradecky’s talent, it won’t be a tough job for the A&R guy." (Chip Midnight)

Bio

Denise Hradecky grew up in the Chicago area and started playing organ and piano in grade school. She left home to move to Boston in 1996, taught herself guitar, and began developing her own musical style as an independent artist, while also learning how to record her own music. In 2000, Denise moved to Raleigh, NC, recording and performing along the east cost. In 2004, she moved back to Chicago to go to school, but still performs in the area. She says she will always be writing and recording, and mostly giving it away for free.
