Denise Tichenor

A talented singer/songwriter who shares her music, message--and her heart --with culturally diverse audiences.

DENISE TICHENOR is a superbly gifted gospel artist committed to relevant music and ministry without compromise. Hailing from Indianapolis, Indiana, Denise grew up a “PK”—a Pentecostal preacher’s kid in a large family of eight children. “Growing up I listened to gospel music—artists like The Clark Sisters and Vanessa Bell Armstrong,” says Denise. “My parents didn’t allow us to listen to R & B music. But on Saturday mornings my brothers, sisters and I would sneak to watch Soul Train and American Bandstand,” Denise says laughing. “Everybody in my family loved music and could sing, but I was more interested in sports and athletics at the time.” While in high school, one of the teachers who knew her family was musical, suggested to Denise that she take a lead part in one of the school’s musical events. “The positive response from that performance was a turning point in my life,” says Denise. “the audience was standing and they were visibly moved after I sang. My mom cried. She told me that God had given me a gift. It was in that moment I knew I had to sing.”

At age eighteen Denise formed her own group, The Sounds of Deliverance, and began honing her skills by performing at local churches for musicals, concerts and special events. She quickly gained local and regional attention, winning the 1990 Gospel Music of America Excellence Award. Then she won a role in a national touring stage production called “Mama Don’t. After participating in a McDonald’s Talent Show—in which the first prize winner would receive a recording contract, Denise came in second place, and Tyscot Records offered Denise a deal as well. Her freshman project “Refreshingly Niecy” (Tyscot Records) garnered a 1992 Stellar Award nomination for Contemporary Female Vocalist and a follow up single featuring the late Rev. James Moore, “Lead Me” continued to add to her ever-growing base of appreciative supporters.

Denise currently serves as Director of Music Ministries at New Horizons Church and for the last twelve years has served as Music Director and Worship Leader in multicultural churches in the Indiana and Missouri areas. A licensed minister, Denise’s genuine appreciation and love for Christian contemporary music and lyrics coupled with her gospel music background makes for exciting musical offerings that go beyond cultural barriers. In her own musical presentations, Denise delivers powerful, exciting soulful interpretations of Christian Contemporary and gospel classics that leave her audiences refreshed and inspired. Coupling contemporary styling with faith-filled lyrics, Denise’s presentation is an explosion of gospel, R& B, pop and jazz influences. Each presentation is a powerful encounter filled with worship anthems and gospel favorites.
Daring to be transparent, Denise’s very personal testimony of challenge, disappointment, loss and victory are often woven into poignant moments of sharing on stage. “ I believe that music has the power to heal,” says Denise.

With stand out performances as a featured lead singer with the acclaimed Dr. Bobby Jones and the Nashville Super Choir, millions have seen Denise on BET Gospel, and in churches, universities and auditoriums across the U.S. and in Europe including Italy, Barcelona, Madrid, Australia, the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

Forging ahead on her own course and calling to change lives, Denise has established Denise Tichenor Ministries. Coupled with her work with the Michael Tichenor Youth Foundation, her efforts are designed to serve youth, college students and women and to encourage them to overcome the obstacles that keep them from living the life God intended. Denise’s future plans include new music, a book and special events designed to inspire and empower.

In a thoughtful moment Denise shares her heart. “I want to share music that reaches and penetrates cultural barriers and brings all people together in the presence of God. “Our common denominator is God. He created us. He is the only one that can satisfy the longing in our heart. It begins with our relationship with God and extends to our relationship with others. That’s what matters. I want my music and ministry to bring people together in a meaningful way.”

With clear vision and sure destiny, Denise Tichenor is poised to positively impact her generation.
