homeless charlie
Written By: dennis orwig
old homeless charlie gets on my bus, he gets on my bus every day
he sits in the back with his old Army pack and he never has too much to say
he's got all his stuff, his old blankets and cups, in a big plastic bag by his side
he paid his buck and he's all bundled up so all day long Charlie rides
now I don't know how his story goes, his history's a mystery to tell
but he don't cause trouble, he keeps to himself, there's days he doesn't look well
and sometimes he hums this old Cowboy song with his eyes turned up to the sky
and from time to time in my mirror I spy a long-ago tear in his eye
old Charlie's lost, I don't think he'll be found, old homeless Charlies rides around
now maybe a woman mangled his heart, left him with memories that tear him apart,
or maybe the bottle tangled his soul, left him with demons that he can't control
I drive him around all over this town, I always bid him "Good day"
I call him a friend and I wish I could mend the damage that left him this way
this bus isn't much but it's his only touch in a world where he has to hide
so day after day he sits and he sways and old homeless Charlie rides
day after day he sits and he sways and old homeless Charlie...... survives
sunrise, sunrise
Written By: dennis orwig
sunrise, sunrise, you can't come too soon
sunrise, sunrise to this empty room
I ain't had a drink since Sunday
I ain't touched no drop-a-dew
and I've had the shakes since Monday,
waitin' here for you, waitin' here for you
sunrise, sunrise, thought you was my friend
sunrise, sunrise, so where you been?
I been layin' here without you
I been lyin' here wide awake
I been prayin' here about you
prayin' for a break
more than I can take
I never knew a night so lonely
I never knew a night so long
I never knew when I started drinkin'
that drink would get this strong
I never knew how far I'd travel down
this one way road to hell
I never knew the endless battle
I'd have to fight 'till I got well
sunrise, sunrise, startin' to get light
sunrise, sunrise, one more night
and one more day will find me sober
one more day will get me clear
another endless night is over
and I'm still here
and I'm still here
and I'm still here
purple heart
Written By: dennis orwig
Well he served two tours in Viet Nam before he was 23
and they sent him home with a piece of schrapnal buried in his knee
so they gave him all the Demerol it took to hide thepain
from a Purple Heart to sleepin' in the park
forgotten is his name
you can see him out here every day with his walker and his dog
scroungin' 'round for beer cans and all thepay phones he can rob
no one knows just where he goes to get out of the rain
from a Purple Heart to sleepin' in the park forgotten is his name
maybe you've seen him in the corner of your eye
maybe you've seen him out there in the night
well he served his country valiantly he sacrificed his life
and in return they send him checks supposed to make things right
but he spends it all on 'rot-gut' and drinks away the apin
from a Purple Heart to sleepin' in the park forgotten is his name
there must me half a million guys out there just like him
he's got that certain look you know like the ice is pretty thin
no one knows just where he goes to get out of the rain
from a Purple Heart to sleepin' in the park forgotten is his name
from a Purple Heart to sleepin' in the park forgotten is their name
