Denver Funk Mob

Approaching their one-year anniversary, the Denver Funk Mob has established themselves as one of the grooviest Jazz outfits around in this short time – with a dash of the Funk for good measure. You can find the Funk Mob entertaining Dazzle’s crowd of cosmopolitans, college kids, Capitol Hill night lifers, and Jazz fanatics every first Thursday, and this is where I found them on May 3rd. As the Mob took the stage, they warmed up the crowd with a mellow tune, building up to more Funky and upbeat tunes. By the end of the second song, the audience offered gratuitous applause at every break. I caught one young lady at the end of the fourth song bouncing away in her seat, taken by the groove they were laying down.

The Mob definitely has a way of establishing a solid rhythm at the start of each song, then interlacing their horns and the harmony of their guitarist for a great-sounding musical interplay. Playing off each other in a Funky frenzy of harmony, the Mob mixes and intermingles their sounds: horns flirting with the bass, guitar feeding off the kick of the drum… It all culminated in the last song, as the percussionist set out into the dancing crowd to hand out shakable instruments for full audience participation. The line was blurred between performers and audience, and we ended on a high-energy note, blessed by the Funky Jazz of the Denver Funk Mob.
