Bio – Derek R. Daniel
“Cat Stevens on a Harley”, a quote from great fellow musician, Chris Buhalis, was also used by Ann Arbor’s Current Magazine as the closest snippet description of Derek’s music and sound. Whimsical and aural-entertaining sentiments for the audience. which includes the “3 R’s” - romantic, raucous and reflective.
Raised in Detroit, Michigan’s metro area, (walking distance from the original Raven Gallery) he has been endearingly referred to as a "suburban nomad”, having resided in almost all of the D’s suburbs, and eventually ending up in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area in the 1990’s. Known for his vocal styling, his music falls into the famed “progressive folk-rock-blues” vein, but disdains being categorized. He has performed on many stages throughout the Southeast Michigan region, including churches, museums, galleries, the Ark, the Trinity Theatre, The Spaghetti Company, Ypsi’s summer Crosstown Series, and most recently, in an upcoming unreleased film short entitled, “The Pick Up”, filmed in Pontiac’s Crofoot. He is also a member in good standing of Southeast Michigan’s Songwriters Anonymous.
Influences include the aforementioned Steven's, Johnny Cash, Tim and Jeff Buckley, Buddy Miller, Nick Drake, Patti Griffin, Richard Thompson, John Martyn, Steve Earle, Elvis Costello, Tom Verlaine, Richard Buckner, Roxy Music, John Prine, and many more. (you get the picture)
