I write songs spanning many styles from comical to ballads and country to rock. I naturally have a small country accent; however, I tend to lean towards a more soulful sound. I was once classified as “funky punk country." Primary instruments are guitar and piano.

Biography

My cousin, more like my brother, died and it was a total surprise. We were close and both took a large interest in music at an early age. He was more technical and I came from the creative perspective. We made songs up in a tent so that we didn’t disturb my mother who worked long shifts. An extension cord, a Casio keyboard, a very basic Boss drum machine, and a Fostex four track recorder that his dad found at a flea market, made our evenings together special. We were going to be famous. Times are different and here I am. Mrs Callahan, my high school English teacher, once told me that you can never work from a blank piece of paper. Using that philosophy, I attempt to write about every subject under the sun crossing multiple genres. Sometimes I like poetic songs and other times I wish to get straight to the point. Being on a stage has always intrigued me and writing songs is one of my strongest passions. I have been influenced by U2, Brad Paisley, Steven Curtis Chapman, Cold Play, Toby Keith, Travis Tritt, Gavin Degraw, Billy Joel, Jason Mraz, and Quincy Jones. I want to leave a legacy for my children as a recognized songwriter. Knowing that many great artists were rejected during their early stages, I wonder who will give me an opportunity.

Showed Up

Written By: Derrick Kinsey

V1
Love with a force like a steam locomotive, I lay helpless across your tracks,
Your love tackled me like a wild beast, baby, my heart had been attacked,
And I never saw you coming, just like I’ve never seen the wind,
But with the same effects when our eyes met, your smile blew my house in.
Yeah that’s when,

Chorus:
You got me tangled up while you slowly take over me,
Yeah I’m stuck in your quicksand, baby,
My friends all tell me I’m not myself lately,
I’ve been sinking deep in love the second you showed up.
Yeah, when you showed

V2
Your love puffed like the big bad wolf screaming, “Little pig, let me in!”
Even this brick house caved when I saw your face as we headed off to your den,
But I refuse to lose my cool; yeah I vowed not to let you win,
But then you pranced by me in that little white dress and I thought, “Dang! Here we go again”.
Yeah that’s when,

Chorus:
You got me tangled up while you slowly take over me,
Yeah I’m stuck in your quicksand, baby,
My friends all tell me I’m not myself lately,
I’ve been sinking deep in love the second you showed up.

Bridge:
I’m all messed up I’m not sure how I got like this,
I’ve always managed control until the day we kissed,
Now it is what it is.

Chorus:
You got me tangled up while you slowly take over me,
Yeah I’m stuck in your quicksand, baby,
My friends all tell me I’m not myself lately,
I’ve been sinking deep in love the second you showed up.

Got My Number

Written By: Derrick Kinsey

V1
Look out boys, there she goes,
Hands in the air, spinnin’ with her eyes closed,
Looks like she got your attention too,
And already captured a few.

Led us blind into her cage,
A room full of mice and a cat to play,
I claimed exception for the band,
And yelled, “Come on sound man.”

Pre – chorus
Could you turn it up? I’d like to see her move.
Out of all the girls she caught my eye in this crowded room.
My whole wide world spins round and round,
Every time she starts to groove.
Then she looked at me…

Chorus
Oh my, would you look at them eyes,
No matter how hard you try,
They’re gonna’ win everytime,
Don’t be surprised,
She’s never gonna’ be denied,
I’m goin’ under,
It’s no wonder, girl,
You’ve got my number.

V2
Georgie Porgie puddin’ and pie,
Ran away from her with a tear in his eye,
So Humpty, think before you climb that wall,
She’d be sure to make you fall.

But the second I thought I was safe from her,
She zeroed in on me; I couldn’t say a word,
And though I offered Humpty advice,
It was I who fell enticed.

Daddy

Written By: Derrick Kinsey

Daddy

Verse 1
It’s not like they planned for this
It happens a little bit at a time
And more than one heart is broken
It’s a shame that children must choose sides
Thinking to herself it’s gonna’ be a long night
But she’s not the only one hurting
She walked by his room and overheard him crying

Chorus
She’ll never forget what he said
Nor get his face from her head
Mama, tell me was it something I did?
He wasn’t even mad at him
Maybe it hadn’t had time to set in
But every tear was a price paid for his father’s sins
In his little head oh how a week can seem so long he said
When is daddy coming home?

Verse 2
It’s like they’ve been off to war
With fresh wounds from the battlefield
Swords were drawn from a love gone wrong
It’s a shame that children have no shields
In a perfect world there’s always sunshine
And he can see his dad holding his mama
Every time he closes his eyes

Chorus
She’ll never forget what he said
Nor get his face from her head
Mama, tell me was it something I did?
He wasn’t even mad at him
Maybe it hadn’t had time to set in
But every tear was a price paid for his father’s sins
In his little head oh how a week can seem so long he said
Hey mama, when is daddy coming home?

Bridge
He sits on his porch
His ball and glove in hand
And thinks to himself
What must I change to have my daddy home again?

Chorus
He wasn’t even mad at him
Maybe it hadn’t had time to set in
But every tear was a price paid for his father’s sins
In his little head oh how a week can seem so long he said
When is daddy coming home?

When are you coming home?
Daddy, when are you coming?
When are you coming home?
