2010

Artist—Desiree Dorion
Song—Soul Back Jack
Album—Soul Back Jack
Label—Independent

A recent article in the Winnipeg Free Press noted that Desiree Dorion is a lawyer.

Whether her legal expertise helped in the making of this album is uncertain, but the question put forth is: can this lawyer sing? Not only can Ms. Dorion sing but she receives writing credits for all songs but one.

This spirited release is bright, lively and even a little gritty as Desiree’s voice has a bit of that Tanya Tucker swagger to it. One of the great things about the album is that you can listen to it from beginning to end and not find any song that was included just to fill the CD.

Every song stands on its own.

Desiree’s brand of country can rock you and this CD does, right out of the gate, with the title track “Soul Back Jack”. What makes music good and exciting is passion and Desiree sings with the conviction of her own passion towards the art of music. A very satisfying album from beginning to end. Every song has catchy melodies and good musicianship. Desiree can reach into your musical soul and sing to you as many artists with much more experience still struggle to do.

"Desiree Dorion (Soul Back Jack) - Independent"

It's good to have a plan B in the music biz. Dauphin's Desiree Dorion took a break from her music to become a lawyer but now she's back with a well-rounded project that displays not only her powerful pipes but her ability to handle all styles of country.

Bad Outlaw shows off her traditional side while All I Need Is You is country pop a la Faith Hill. Kiss and Make Up proves she knows her way around a rocker. She also excels at heartfelt ballads like Can't Have Me and Like I'm Gonna Love You. The album's most distinctive track is also the most personal: Freedom Ain't Free is a rootsy number about her Grandfather.

Soul Back Jack, produced by Arun Chaturvedi, is a stellar collection that confirms Dorion deserves the attention of record labels and radio programmers everywhere. She holds her CD release party at the Park Theatre on Oct. 28. 4 stars - Winnipeg Free Press

Bio

The emotion in Desiree's Dorion's newest song "Turn To Me" is palpable. It's a touching tribute to her 3 week old baby girl Grace. "We wrote the song with Gracie lying there in the room staring up at us" says Dorion. "I recorded the vocal holding Gracie and if you solo the track you can hear her softly crying at times in the background".

You might expect for a singer to take some time off after giving birth…but not Dorion. In her typical renaissance woman style, she was right back at it, writing and recording songs with Producer Arun Chaturvedi (Little Hawk, James Struthers, Keeping Up With The Kardashians) for her next release only weeks after giving birth. "I'm actually really excited" comments Dorion "Maternity leave from my day job as a lawyer will allow me the time I need to focus on writing and recording my new record."

The album will serve as the follow up to her critically acclaimed record "Soul Back Jack" which garnered her multiple awards and nominations including Best Country Album and Best Female Artist at the 2010 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards, Best Country Artist at the 2010 Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards, Best Country Album at the 2011 North American Indigenous Image Award, Best Country Album at the 2011 Indian Summer Music Awards, and Best Country Album and Best Female Artist at the 2011 Native American Music Awards.

Honesty, emotion, and work ethic are some of the defining attributes of Dorion. These coupled with her gift for songwriting, and her versatile voice (at times reminiscent of greats like Dolly Parton) are what sets this young country crooner apart.
