Bio

In a recent article on emerging pop singer Destenee titled “The Fate Of Music,” Music Connection Magazine said it best about the 19 year old singer, songwriter, producer and all around musical powerhouse: “Every now and then an artist shows up for the whole world to adore.” At an age when most young women are singing along to anthems, not blazing cultural trails by creating them, the singer (who uses her real given name) is breaking ground on her pop music career with two explosive tracks from her upcoming debut album Free that are bound to inspire both her own generation and fans of all ages.
“Free” the singer’s infectious debut single is an empowerment song, a declaration of her personal artistic independence that taps into everyone’s desire to break boundaries within their own lives. “Free” is quickly gaining traction in radio around the country. With a strong presence on myspace ( HYPERLINK "http://www.myspace.com/destenee" HYPERLINK "http://www.myspace.com/desteneemusic" HYPERLINK "http://www.myspace.com/desteneemusic"www.myspace.com/destenee), facebook, imeem, jango, reverbnation and other Internet social networks, Destenee is becoming an overseas sensation as well, invading the radio airwaves with rotation in Europe and Asia.
Once her fans break “Free,” she’ll no doubt follow up with her next anthem, “Tomorrow,” about learning to stop dwelling on the future and the past and start celebrating the moment; as a nod to this philosophy, she calls her touring band 2Morrow. Beyond the emotional empowerment songs, Destenee writes with depth and honesty about deeper emotional places within herself as she learns to overcome the fear of falling in love (“Turn Off The Lights”) and dream of running away with a boyfriend who doesn’t meet with everyone’s approval (“Leave It All Behind Us”)
Now is the time to celebrate that moment with Destenee, a multi-cultural force of musical nature whose mix of pop, R&B, rock and exotic/world and Latin musical influences reflect her upbringing. The singer’s vibe is commercial and mainstream Pop/R&B while reflecting a cool and enticing international coloring. Destenee's work ethic is purely DIY. In addition to producing Free and writing all the tracks herself or with collaborators, Destenee played piano, guitar and bass. She also established an independent label to release her music, Kestebray Music Group, LLC.
“Since moving from Boston to L.A. to pursue my career a few years ago,” she says, “I have been writing tons of songs and working with people like George “Funky” Brown (from Kool and The Gang), Sterling Davis (Robin Thicke, Une), Ted Greenberg (Standing in the Shadows of Motown), Danny Sembello (Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle), and Morris Hayes (Prince, Elton John, Lenny Kravitz) who have mentored me and encouraged me to be a musician. After a while, I began developing my own sound, which is a blend that draws on my background and incorporates a lot of multi-cultural influences. I gravitated towards pop, rock and R&B with live instruments and some synth mixed with organic sounds.”
Destenee adds, “I realized that I enjoy creating and writing music with positive messages and that if I did what came naturally, I could become the artist I feel destined to be. I’m proud of the fact that I am a musician, composer, and songwriter and not just a vocalist. The song ‘Free’ is about breaking away from the expectations of others to embrace who I really am as a person and artist. It’s also about telling people they’re free to live the way they want to, love who they want to and make the mistakes along the way that will help them become better people.”
Almost as if her birth name was given to her as a calling, Destenee’s life has been an ongoing creative and musical whirlwind from the time she taught herself piano at age four. She’s performed mostly in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, but also in Massachusetts, DC, Maryland, New Mexico and Arizona. L.A.’s been an especially great proving ground—Destenee has earned raves for her performances at hotspots like the House of Blues, The Roxy, Key Club, Kress, Club Area, The Knitting Factory, Cinespace, Hollywood Palladium, and Staples Center. Adding to the anticipation leading up to her recording debut, she’s also built an energized fan base with appearances at over 600 high schools, middle schools, colleges and universities.
Having performed at NAMM and other music conferences, Destenee has earned endorsements with US Music Corp/Washburn Guitars, The Bling Jewelry as well as the high fashion clothing line Cowgirl Heaven and Hot Topic. Her growing list of accolades includes winning nods Las Vegas Music Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Vocalist. After studying with several top acting coaches, she also launched her career as an actress with a lead role in “Sister Switch,” a film by Torrance Colvin that will be released in 2010.
