Biography

Détective, named after the J-L Godard film, is a new rock band from Los Angeles.

Initially conceived as a studio project, to date the band has released two EPs, Very Fallen World and Basket of Masks, available digitally and set for a June vinyl release. A full length - already recorded - will follow this summer, as well as a national tour opening for Guided by Voices

Détective is James Greer, Guylaine Vivarat and Rory Modica.

Musician, critic, novelist, and screenwriter JAMES GREER played in Guided By Voices during its most fertile phase, from 1994-96. He played on GBV's iconic Alien Lanes and Under the Bushes, Under the Stars LPs, as well as on a slew of EPs and singles, U.S. and European tours, and live television appearances (Jon Stewart, Conan O'Brien). He wrote and recorded the track "Trendspotter Acrobat" for the EP Sunfish Holy Breakfast — Greer is one of only two songwriters other than Robert Pollard to have sole writing credit on a Guided By Voices song. A former Senior Editor of SPIN Magazine, he is also the author of the novels Artificial Light (LHotB/Akashic 2006) and The Failure (Akashic 2010). He’s written or co-written movies for Lindsay Lohan, Jackie Chan, and Steven Soderbergh, among others.

GUYLAINE VIVARAT has played in several prominent local bands, including Tennis System and Useless Keys. She works as a translator and has translated a number of scholarly articles and novels into French, as well as providing subtitles for films and TV series. A multi-instrumentalist, Guylaine plays guitar, bass, keyboards and sings. She frequently collaborates with other LA artists, most recently with electronica duo 2 Hearts and Chemicals.

Streets and the City

Written By: Guylaine Vivarat

Stand on a street sign
Let all your teeth shine
What a lowly sight
No one stares you down

I know you feel tall
Taller than before
What are you in for?
What are you here for?
No one stares you down

What a lowly sight
No one stares you down

Do you feel strong?
On your own
Do you feel strong?
Do you feel strong?
On your own

Stand on a street sign
Stand on a street sign
On your own

Nectarine Machine

Written By: James Greer

You waited and I wanted
This much is undisputed
Ahead you
Before me
And changes instituted now
For the good of the clean
Nectarine machine

You tried it and I tried it
And then we both denied it
Above you
Below me
And never satisfied it well
Orange over green
Nectarine machine

You said it and I did it
And never understood it
Behind you
Hereafter
It doesn't mean that much to me
I hate your Holocene
Nectarine machine

Rally Point

Written By: James Greer/Guylaine Vivarat

If you start where you started
If you stop at the end
You’ll hear an open sound
You’ll walk on fallow ground

If you follow the river
To the river’s bad end
You’ll see a leaf fall down
You’ll never turn around

It’s a very fallen world
Into which we have been hurled
Like a stone into deepest lake
Like a sleeper who cannot wake

Stop and start
Stop and start

If you part at the parting
If you break at the bend
You’ll stop to settle down
You’ll start to spin around

It’s a very fallen world
Into which we have been hurled
Like a stone into deepest lake
Like a sleeper who cannot wake

Stop and start
Stop and start

I'd Rather Run

Written By: Guylaine Vivarat

You talk of ills to come
I heard you well
Well maybe I…
I’ll ride and turn my back at all the rest
I won’t be around

Take
Take all you’ve said and done
You know
I’d rather run

When friends are lining up
To watch you fail
You’ll greet them with
Dull pieces of your life
To throw away
Well I don’t play
So wish me well

You beg for a friend
Well all is said and done
You know I’d rather run
I’d rather rather rather rather rather rather rather rather run
You can’t have it all
You can’t have it all
You can’t have it all

There is no other line I’d like to break
I’m not that kind
You talk of years to come
I heard you well
A shame I won’t be around

You can’t have it all
You can’t have it all
You can’t have it all

Monochrome Girl

Written By: James Greer

Televangelisted
Drinking double-fisted
Caught in headlights, following footsteps
That were nothing like she'd ever seen
It wasn't just the color green

And I can't ask for more
And I won't ask for more
Than an open door to the world
For monochrome girl

And we all followed
'Cause we had nothing better to do
I'm not sure that is true
But it's something like the color blue

And I can't ask for more
And I won't ask for more
Than an open door to the world
For monochrome girl

We might as well be dead
She said go to bed
It was better than the color red

And I can't ask for more
And I won’t ask for more
Than an open door to the world
For monochrome girl

Dommage!

Written By: Guylaine Vivarat

Dommage !
Il serait bien temps de choisir
Alors

Je me moque du froid
Du temps qui nous rend fous
J’ai oublié, tu vois
Ce qui n’allait pas
Entre nous
Il est trop tard
Allez viens, là
Ici, ce soir, on ira bien quelque part
C’est bien mieux comme ça

Rhodesian Man

Written By: Guylaine Vivarat

Someone will tear
The letter you wrote in the sand
And the harder you break
The better you’ll know where to stand

Turn my days around
Turn my days around
Someone will tear
The letter you wrote in the sand
And the harder you break
The better you’ll know where to stand

A circle inside
A circle inside
I can make fire

Turn my days around
Turn my days around
Someone will tear
The letter you wrote in the sand
And the harder you break
The better you’ll know where to stand

Train That Never Ends

Written By: James Greer/Guylaine Vivarat

Before another day goes by
Another vague array of many roles to play at every turn

Before another day goes by the far horizon
There are many miles to ride and no return

Oh get me on a train that never ends
And jump along
Get me on a train that never ends
Get me on a train that never ends
Get me on a train that never ends

Turn you up and down around the face of many days
Where many words you said were not allowed

Sunset speeds along the line along the way
And there were many words you said: we're not alone

Oh get me on a train that never ends
And jump along
Get me on a train that never ends
Get me on a train that never ends
Get me on a train that never ends
