Biography

Dev Singh is an American singer/interpreter/songwriter with roots in the 1960's folk revival. He has performed his distinctive brand of music at clubs, festivals and on concert stages in the Midwest and the West. Dev presents a varied and entertaining program of blues, ballads, traditional, contemporary and original songs with guitar, autoharp, mouth-bow, dulcimer and piano accompaniment.

The son of an American mother and an East Indian father, Dev was born in the Valley of the Moon - Sonoma, California. His first musical influence was the family's record collection of classical, Broadway show tunes and Punjabi music. Add to that his exposure to traditional folk and pop music genres and you have a style that has been called "wonderfully diverse and unusual." (The Boise Weekly)

A graduate of U.C. Berkeley, Dev also taught folk instruments at a community music school and did musical outreach to special populations in psychiatric wards and rest homes. While a transfer student at UCLA, he took first place in the vocalist division of the annual "Spring Sing" competition. After years of performing in California, Dev literally got into his car one day and drove to Chicago. There he was welcomed and nurtured by some of the town's finer blues and jazz musicians. That influence can be heard in his 1981 release, Made in Chicago. Since then he has been touring nationally, now basing out of Ann Arbor, Michigan. In some of the spaces during his music career, he has also dug graves, worked in a pickle factory, washed hands of medical conventio n attendees to demonstrate skin care products and served several years in the corporate world. Happily, music is now his primary endeavor.

Dev's recordings have also been included on samplers on the FOLKWAYS, CABERNET, and CENTURY labels. A RAMPUR artist, Dev Singh brings all the authority of his years of professional experience with an enthusiastic and cooperative attitude.
