Biography

Gateway 23 is a trio of musicians based in northwest Sydney and consists of Dez Williams on acoustic guitar and lead vocals, Karen Williams on acoustic bass guitar and backing vocals and Dave Astley on lead guitar.

The group perform original songs and also numerous cover songs. Their music is easy listening with a focus on lyrical diction and vocal expertise. Backed by rhythmic guitar, melodic lead guitar and driving bass the original songs will take you along a lyrical journey down governed, bludgeoned streets, over dreamingtime deserts, across timeless mountains, behind lines of crazy, lonely men who are searching for sweet, sweet love.

The band have recently completed recording their debut album ‘Old Street’ made up of 12 original songs written by Dez Williams whose primary songwriting influences are Bob Dylan, Rodriguez, Van Morrison, Neil Young and Leonard Cohen. Two of the group’s original songs were shortlisted in the 2010 Australian Songwriters Association Songwriting competition.

G23 gigs consist of 40+ songs where 15 are original songs and the rest are covers. Kaz sings lead vocal on 10 of the covers and Dez sings the rest. Covers include acoustic versions of a variety of artists including Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Katie Melua, The Waifs, INXS, Paul Kelly, The Motels, Dire Straits, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and many more.

Tone Ranley of the Songwriting Society of Australia wrote in its magazine 'Connections'; "Dez Williams sends me, I can't put it plainer than that, his songs are as good as you can possibly get, people like Dez can stop you in your tracks with a wise observation about life and its foibles".

Old Street

Written By: Dez Williams

Old Street

There’s a fountain gone dry in the corner of my eye it’s not my world I’m captive
Though patient I am I will do what I can for those that know what is happening

It’s a long street this old street it’s worn and its warped
Stolen and broken a fight to be fought
It’s for a tree and I’m just a sapling

My complexion is scarred its withered and marred can I lose it now that I’ve found it
For my utmost hope is to level this slope and step from the corner I’m grounded

It’s a long street this old street it’s knotted and gnarled
Profane and insane and its wintry cold
This old street is still heading downward

My head full of fears and my eyes flowing tears it’s a manmade disease I’ve contracted
Educated with lies it’s a giant surprise just to know or to find what a fact is

It’s a long street this old street it’s blistered and burned
Blasted and battered and choked and churned
This old street never relaxes

My hairs growing long but it won’t do me wrong only death will stop it from growing
If it falls out or greys I can number my days but its time and nature that’s knowing

It’s a long street this old street it’s fractured and forced,
It’s tangled and mangled into changing its course
But this old street will never stop flowing

There’s a battle been fought yet a thousand years short another battle and peace will be breathing
It’s a tangible dream, imprisoned, unseen behind a wall so tall and unyielding

It’s a long street this old street it’s fooled and feared,
It’s governed and bludgeoned its smudged and it’s smeared
This old street is too old to believe in – its too long and too old to believe in

A Handshake or a Kiss

Written By: Dez Williams

A Handshake or a Kiss

There’s a woman dressed like Moses,
Carrying her children through a dry hot desert sun
There’s a tavern shuts and closes
A man counts his shillings and staggers home drunk.

Do you think one day not far away if I pray for a wish?
Someday we’ll go our way with a Handshake or a Kiss

Repentance isn’t easy…
Your face is so pale and you are so young.
Dependence is deceiving,
There’s a hammer on a nail and there’s a hand on a gun

Do you think one day not far away if I pray for a wish?
Someday we’ll go our way with a Handshake or a Kiss

Now the hunters go out hunting,
With telescopic vision and kaleidoscopic eyes
And I wonder what they’re wondering,
Out there on a mission killing everything alive

Do you think one day not far away if I pray for a wish?
Someday we’ll go our way with a Handshake or a Kiss
Someday we’ll go our way with a Handshake or a Kiss

Come to Peace

Written By: Dez Williams

Come to Peace

If our weapons turn to ploughshares if our armies go to work
To build everyone a house where they have a home on earth
Love your neighbour and your enemy and let them know your name
Give freely and be friendly and would they then be the same

Come to peace all the world Come and teach the boys and girls
That our peace is a precious pearl we cannot reach in a warring world

Judge you not only judge yourself you have no command
To take the life from someone else is blood on all our hands
As you cling to what is worldly as flesh goes after flesh
Know they are unworthy in this one worthy quest

Come to peace all the world Come and teach the boys and girls
That our peace is a precious pearl we cannot reach in a warring world

As your kingdoms stand divided as your house begins to fall
Is this what you’ve decided is good for one and all
Suffer all the little children unprotected in their shell
If we count them in their millions will we buy or will we sell?

Come to peace all the world Come and teach the boys and girls
That our peace is a precious pearl we cannot reach in a warring world
Come to peace my warring world

Soft Rose

Written By: Dez Williams

Soft, soft Rose your petals are fading
No-one knows the love you are saving
Is covered with snow but always will grow

And when come the shadows as dark as the sea
I will stand by you as a mountain, as a tree

Soft, soft rose your petals are falling
Cold wind blows and I hear you calling
Blood runs cold our love grows old

And when you stand naked no blossom, no bloom
I will stand by you as the sun and the moon

Sweet, sweet love your circle is turning
Below; above my heart is yearning
To give all my thanks to live all my strength

Here in this winter that loneliness brings
I dream of your warmth of the summer, the spring

Sweet, sweet love when you’re beside me
I know of your sweetness inside me
Grows and grows flows and flows

Like a rippling river that runs to the sea
You reach out to touch me to set my heart free

Soft, soft rose the sky is clearer
Warm breeze blows springtime is nearer
Your love is alive and never will die

When you stand naked; no blossom, no bloom
I will stand by you as the sun as the moon

Soft, soft rose Sweet, sweet love
Soft, soft rose Sweet, sweet love
