Bio

DIAFRIX have pushed past their status as Melbourne’s ‘next big thing’ and are building a massive cult following with a growing reputation as one of Australia’s most amazing live acts. Named as the Best Homegrown New Artist in the coveted Age EG Awards last year, their debut album Concrete Jungle has taken their iconic concoction of hip-hop, funk & African roots and developed it into a truly world-class sound.

Throughout their extensive career in the live circuit, the boys have played at festivals like Big Day Out, Merideth and Falls Festival to name a few. Earlier in '09, Diafrix undertook their first European tour, playing in packed-out intimate venues in cities like Paris, London and Amsterdam – this was the beginning of their ever-increasing international success. Straight off the plane, they headed on the road with Bliss N Eso to perform to over 20,000 people.

The group – which was born in the sketchy Melbourne suburb of Footscray - comprises of two frontmen, Momo and Azmarino, both of whom are African refugees but have lived through struggles which are worlds apart. Momo arrived in Australia with his family at the age of three after fleeing their homeland of the Comoros islands. His background and culture left him feeling isolated in a community which was not yet accustomed to African migration. Azmarino, on the other hand, originally hails from Eritrea but didn't arrive in Australia until earlier this decade – after a life of citizenship hunting throughout countries like Jordan, Italy and Switzerland. He lived and worked illegally in the country for six years until he was made Australian citizen in 2007. Definitely not the typical story of an Aussie band, but one that reflects an underrepresented and growing community of first generation Australians.

Over the ‘09 / ‘10 summer period, they slammed the festival circuit performing at the likes of Pyramid Rock, Hot BBQ, Sound Safari, Peats Ridge, Good Vibrations and Sydney Music Festival alongside amazing support slots for acts including Lupe Fiasco, Matisyahu and Daniel Merriweather.

Less than one year after releasing their debut album, they head back into the studio to lay down some new tracks. The next twelve months has monstrous written all over it – hold on to ya seats ladies and gentleman!
